The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the supracostal access for percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). Between July 2007 and June 2010, 122 patients underwent PCNL, of whom 28 (23%) had supracostal access. All procedures were performed in a single sitting under general anesthesia. The data were analysed for indications, stone clearance rates and the complications associated with supracostal puncture. The indications for a supracostal access were staghorn stones (50%), pelvis ...

The biomass of the cyanobacteria, Spirulina maxima 2342, was autotrophically obtained in a 20 l bioreactor under illumination and air bubbling and analyzed for its photobiological hydrogen production capability. A volume of 250 ml of Spirulina sp. taken from the reactor was used as culture sample for performing the experiments. An illumination–agitation process was employed to induce the hydrogen photoproduction reaction. The hydrogen produced in this process was quantified by gas chromatography ...

Hydrogen (H2) production from experiments with Spirulina maxima 2342 is reported in this work. The performance of this photosynthetic microorganism for producing H2 was evaluated for the first time under specific experimental conditions (e.g., a biomass concentration of 0.34 ± 0.02 g, a light intensity of 150 μE.s-1.m-2 and reaction times of 19.3 ± 1.2 h). The performance of this photosynthetic microorganism for producing hydrogen was successfully improved by the addition of sodium dithionite (a reducing ...

Mutations in GATA6, GATA4 and PDX1 cause congenital diabetes and pancreatic hypoplasia (PH) or agenesis. We investigated clinical features and treatment of 10 PH patients through the University of Chicago National Monogenic Diabetes Registry. Data was self-reported or extracted from medical records. Similar to previous cohorts, congenital heart defects, gallbladder agenesis, and exocrine pancreatic insufficiency were often present, whereas features such as recurrent infections and epilepsy have not ...

Background: Neonatal diabetes is rare, but most commonly caused by activating heterozygous mutations in either of the KATP channel genes KCNJ11or ABCC8. While a large fraction of those with KATP-NDM exhibit a spectrum of neurodevelopmental difficulties, patients and families also describe difficulties with sleep that has not been well-characterized. Methods: To assess sleep duration and quality, all participants wore an actigrapher (Actiwatch® 2) for at least 7 full days and completed sleep questionnaires ...

Background: Infancy-onset diabetes is largely monogenic before 6 months of age, whereas autoimmune type 1 diabetes is more likely from 6-12 months of age. As the most common neonatal diabetes, patients with KATP channel mutations exhibit a spectrum of neurodevelopmental disability that is largely related to brain expression of mutated channels. It is not known how glycemic dysregulation of any type of early-onset diabetes may affect brain development. Methods: Subjects included from UChicago Monogenic ...

Background: Activating mutations in KCNJ11 or ABCC8 cause neonatal diabetes (NDM) as well as neurodevelopmental difficulties, related to expression of mutated KATP channels in pancreatic beta cells as well as brain. Even individuals with more mildly activating KCNJ11 mutations underperform on many neurodevelopmental measures compared to sibling controls; however, very little information has been available about those with ABCC8 mutations. Methods: Surveys were used to assess attention-deficit hyperactivity ...
