The objectives of the present study were to observe the temporal pattern of avian influenza virus (AIV) introduction into Japan and to determine which migratory birds play an important role in introducing AIV. In total, 19,407 fecal samples from migratory birds were collected at 52 sites between October 2008 and May 2015. Total nucleic acids extracted from the fecal samples were subjected to reverse transcription loop-mediated isothermal amplification to detect viral RNA. Species identification of ...

In January 2011, magmatic eruptions at Shinmoe-dake, Kirishima, Japan, started for the first time in 300 years. After three sub-plinian explosive events, lava accumulation started at the summit crater. The accumulation lasted for about three months, and the final volume of the accumulated lava reached 1.5 × 107 m3. We conducted aeromagnetic surveys using an unmanned autonomous helicopter over the Shinmoe-dake summit crater in late May 2011, and late October to early November, 2011, in order to investigate ...

Epidemiological studies have raised awareness of the problem of undiagnosed kidney disease and suggest that early identification and treatment will reduce the global burden of patients requiring dialysis. However, there are insufficient data on how to identify subjects who are at risk for developing overt kidney disease in a human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) population.A 2-year prospective cohort study was conducted to determine the predictors of overt kidney disease. The cohort was comprised of ...

Background. The emergence of kidney disease as an important comorbidity among human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients receiving highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) has emphasized the critical importance of early identification of patients at risk for kidney disease. Use of urine as a diagnostic medium may allow the noninvasive detection of incipient nephropathy in these patients.

Abstract We have devised an automatic detection algorithm for unresolved moving objects, such as asteroids and comets. The algorithm uses many CCD images in order to detect very dark moving objects that are invisible on a single CCD image. We carried out a trial observation to investigate its usefulness, using a 35-cm telescope. By using the algorithm, we succeeded to detect asteroids down to about 21 mag. This algorithm will contribute significantly to searches for near-Earth objects and to solar- ...

In this paper we propose a new method known as “the stacking method” to detect small pieces of unknown GEO debris, in which several images taken with a CCD camera are used to detect this debris. With this method, the streaks of stars are completely eliminated, and the sky background fluctuation decreases significantly. This allows the detection of very dark debris that is not visible on a single image. We tested this method by using the 45 cm telescope at the Yatsugatake Observatory and a small CCD ...

The molecular modelling of oximes having 5-benzyl-2,4-thiazolidinedione moieties, agonists of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR gamma), was performed with respect to their structures complexed with the ligand binding domain of PPAR gamma. For each ligand molecule, the 5-benzyl-2,4-thiazolidinedione head group was used as an anchor and the conformation of the rest of the molecule was searched for the most energetically favorable interaction with the receptor by systematic ...

The prevalence of the metabolic syndrome, regarded as an important risk factor for coronary artery disease and stroke, is growing. However, the association between the metabolic syndrome and stroke, particularly in patients following coronary revascularization, remains unknown. Therefore, the relationship between the metabolic syndrome and stroke was examined among patients who had achieved complete coronary revascularization.1836 consecutive patients who had achieved complete revascularization ...

The effects of the support on the catalytic performance of supported Ni catalysts for the hydrogenation of soybean oil were examined. The turnover frequency (TOF) for Ni/TiO2 was greater than those for other Ni catalysts. Among the examined Ni catalysts, the Ni/TiO2 catalysts were effective for the reduction of trans fatty acid (TFA) levels (minimum 10.5%) in hydrogenated oils at an iodine value (IV) of 70, independent of the difference in the crystalline structure of TiO2. In addition, the oils hydrogenated ...

The effects of various support materials on the catalytic performance of supported platinum catalysts for the hydrogenation of soybean oil were examined. There was a linear relationship between the catalytic activity and the platinum dispersion of the platinum catalysts. Among the examined catalysts, Pt/BaSO4 was effective for the reduction of both trans fatty acid (TFA) and additional saturated fatty acid (ASFA) levels in partially hydrogenated oils (iodine value (IV) = 70). In addition, the relationship ...

2,5-Diamino-3,6-dicyanopyrazine (2), a new fluorescent chromophore for functional dye materials, was synthesized by an oxidative coupling reaction of 2,3-diamino-3-(phenylthio)acrylonitrile (1). Compound 2 has a symmetrical structure and a strong intramolecular charge-transfer chromophoric system. It shows strong yellowish-green fluorescence in solution, and thus has good potential as a synthetic intermediate for fluorescent dye chromophores. Alkylation of the amino groups of 2 produced a bathochromic ...
