The major side effects of mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) are leukopenia, gastrointestinal (GI) disturbances, and a slight increase of viral infections (1). The GI symptoms may result in drug decrease or withdrawal in 63% and 15% of transplant recipients, respectively. We report the case of a 52-year-old patient who received a cadaver kidney transplant in September 1999. Maintenance immunosuppression consisted of cyclosporine (Neoral) 400 mg/day, prednisolone 10 mg/day, and MMF 2 g/day. In March 2000, the ...

This article, written by a collective of international researchers and worldwide representatives of indigenous populations, is an open letter to the WHO, based on the latest elements from the scientific literature, and the latest climatological data. It takes stock of the health consequences of global warming, and urges research organizations to take an interest in infectious agents formerly stored in the layers of ground (frozen or not) and now mobilized, then released from a distance.

Work on human remains and old biological samples is a potential source of contamination by conventional or atypical infectious agents. Similarly, current and future environmental changes are a source of resurgence of ancient epidemic diseases. To what extent are anthropologists sorcerer apprentices (especially those working on ancient samples, i.e. paleo-anthropologists)? Are ancient skeletons, palaeosols and museum objects with a biological component at risk for current populations? Unless there ...

During the Middle Ages and Renaissance, embalming the cadaver of the elite was common practice, being a highly technical treatment mixing vegetal and mineral substances. To assess the exact kind of embalming reserved for the dead body (with the practical necessities of desiccation and good odour), we performed a full biomedical analysis of the mummified remains of John Plantagenet of Lancaster, first Duke of Bedford, regent of France for his nephew, the English King Henri VI (died 1435 AD). Here, ...

The discovery of a burial of a woman associated with a partially expulsed fetus in an archaeological context baffles anthropologists for years. Such burials are currently interpreted as complications during parturition; hemorrhage, prematurity and, mainly, dystocia. However, if a combination of field anthropology and forensic science is applied to these findings, the conclusion can often be that of a post-mortem expulsion of the fetus. Discussing the recent osteo-archaeological case from Lokomotiv ( ...

Recent paleopathological cases have shown the usefulness of interdisciplinary odontological studies in the investigation of historical figures. A macroscopic examination of the mandible of Saint-Louis (13th c. AD), conserved in the cathedral of Notre-Dame (Paris, France) was carried out, and compared with biographical data about the life and death of the King, and contemporaneous cases of infectious/inflammatory diseases. We found post-mortem tooth loss associated with moderate signs of infectious ...

The demand for 'high-tech' element resources (e.g., rare earth elements, lithium, platinum group elements) has increased with their continued consumption in developed countries and the emergence of developing economies. To provide a sound knowledge base for future generations, it is necessary to identify the spatial distribution of critical elements at a broad-scale, and to delineate areas for follow-up surveys. Subsequently, this knowledge can be used to study possible environmental consequences ...

The supposed relics of “Mary-Magdalene” are preserved in Provence (France) in an ancient tradition. They consist of a dry skull and a lock of hair. For the first time, they were officially subjected to an extensive medico-surgical examination by photogrammetry, high-magnification binocular lenses, scanning electron microscope, and energy-dispersive X-ray elemental analysis, to propose a full computer-aided facial reconstruction. The preliminary results are presented here.

Following a global morphological and micro-CT scan examination of the original and cast of the skeleton of Australopithecus afarensis AL 288 (‘Lucy’), Kappelman et al. have recently proposed a diagnosis of a fall from a significant height (a tree) as a cause of her death.
