This work analyzed the effect of electrical stimulation of the nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS) on the development of electrical amygdaloid kindling (AK) in freely moving cats.Nine male adult cats with implanted electrodes in both amygdalae (basolateral nucleus), both lateral geniculate bodies, left NTS, and both prefrontal cortices were used. Electromyogram and electrooculogram also were recorded. The AK was performed every 24 h (1-s train, 1-ms pulses, 60 Hz, 300-600 microA). The NTS was stimulated ...

The effect of electrical vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) on sleep and behavior was analyzed in freely moving cats. Eight cats were prepared for 23-h sleep recordings. The left vagus nerve of four of them was stimulated during 1 min, five times at 1-h intervals, for 5 days. The VNS induces: ipsilateral myosis, blinking, licking, abdominal contractions, upward gaze, swallowing, and eventually yawning and compulsive eating, as well as an increase of ponto-geniculate–occipital (PGO) wave density and of ...

A Gram-negative pink-pigmented bacillus (named 2A) was isolated from Solanum tuberosum L. cv. Desirée plants that were strikingly more developed, presented increased root hair density, and higher biomass than other potato lines of the same age. The 16S ribosomal DNA sequence, used for comparative gene sequence analysis, indicated that strain 2A belongs to the genus Methylobacterium. Nucleotide identity between Methylobacterium sp. 2A sequenced genome and the rest of the species that belong to the ...

In Canada, fire danger is rated by the Canadian forest fire danger rating system (CFFDRS). One of its components is the fire weather index (FWI) system, which has among others the drought code (DC). DC is used here as a surrogate of dead forest fuel moisture. DC values were computed from weather data acquired between 1993 and 1999 and compared to 10-day composite NOAA-AVHRR images acquired over Canadian northern boreal forests. They were yearly correlated with single compositing period and cumulative ...

Subthreshold electrical stimulation of the amygdala (kindling) activates neuronal pathways increasing the expression of several neuropeptides including thyrotropin releasing-hormone (TRH). Partial kindling enhances TRH expression and the activity or its inactivating ectoenzyme; once kindling is established (stage V), TRH and its mRNA levels are further increased but TRH-binding and pyroglutamyl aminopeptidase II (PPII) activity decreased in epileptogenic areas. To determine whether variations in TRH ...

Pyroglutamyl peptidase II (PPII) is a neuronal ectoenzyme responsible for thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH) degradation at the synaptic cleft. PPII, heterogeneously distributed in different brain regions and adenohypophysis, is regulated under various endocrine conditions where TRH is involved in thyrotropin or prolactin regulation but only at the adenohypophyseal level. TRH can downregulate PPII activity in cultured adenohypophyseal cells. TRH present in extrahypothalamic brain areas has been postulated ...

The effect of repeated Na-penicillin (PCN) microinjections in the temporal lobe amygdala (AM) of free-moving cats was investigated in order to establish if kindling epileptogenesis is possible with this procedure. The cortical propagation of the PCN-induced post-discharge in AM and the sequence of behavioral changes induced by PCN were similar to those of AM electrical kindling. Nevertheless, the epileptogenic effect of PCN had a different evolution from that of electrical kindling, since some PCN ...

Development of amygdaloid kindling was analyzed during REM sleep and during wakefulness. Daily evolution of electrographic and behavioral changes was significantly delayed in REM kindled rats. The number of kindling trials required to reach the first generalized convulsive seizure was also significantly increased in comparison with awake kindled animals. Changes in sleep organization were measured under REM kindling conditions. A significant increase in total sleep time and in the percentage of ...

Summary: A penicillin focus was induced in the postcruciate region of the cerebral cortex of the cat. Analyzing the Purkinje cell unit responses to consecutive interictal paroxysms, 60% of the cells studied (total number, 148) were found to respond with activation and 25%, with deactivation; the others were not uniform in their responses. These different response patterns were attributed to the high patchy topographic relation between the cerebral cortex and the cerebellar system as well as to the ...

Brain content of leucine-enkephalin and methionine-enkephalin changes independently during kindling of the amygdala. Both peptides were measured after 4, 8, 15 and 21 days of stimulation. Leuenkephalin showed a progressive increase during the kindling: the results on the 4th day did not differ significantly from the controls, whereas those on the 8th day displayed an increase only in the stimulated left hemisphere and those on the 15th day showed an increase in both hemispheres. This increase was ...

The cerebellar influence on the cobalt experimental epilepsy has been investigated in unrestrained, unanesthetized rats by stimulation, total removal and temporary cooling of the cerebellum. Cerebellar stimulation generally provoked inhibition of the epileptic waves produced in the brain by cobalt application and depressed the sensory responses in the cerebral cortex. The occasional reversed facilitatory effects of the stimulation are discussed in the light of other peculiar effects of cerebellar ...

There are reasons to consider incomplete the description of sleep in many non-human primate species. Recording animals by highly sensitive videos to obtain detailed descriptions of nighttime behavior and evidence of muscle activity while in a resting posture, seems a promising approach to the non-invasive study of sleep in non-human primates. The present work describes the use of ultrasensitive videocameras to record and analyze spontaneous nighttime behaviors in captive non-human primates. Its ...

SUMMARY In “encáephale isole” preparations eye movements and depression of the electromyo‐gram of neck muscles were recorded during interclonic electrical silences and coinciding with the arrest of the seizures elicited by electrocortical stimulation. In the intact curarized animal the interclonic periods of electrical silence and arrest of seizure discharges were accompanied by a low voltage fast activity in dorsal limbic structures, pontine, and mesencephalic nuclei. At the end of the seizure, ...
