A study was conducted on 207 lactating camels in six herds in Kenya to evaluate the California mastitis test (CMT) for the detection of intramammary infections (IMIs) caused by Streptococcus agalactiae and Staphylococcus aureus and to investigate the prevalence of both the pathogens in the camel udder. IMI with S. agalactiae was found in 12% of all camels sampled. IMI with S. aureus was present in 11% of all camels sampled. The herd-level prevalence of IMI varied between 0 and 50% for S. agalactiae ...

Water and oxygen deficiencies in the soybean crop cultivated on lowland soils are an important topic of research. The objective of this study was to investigate changes in water and oxygen supply and soybean yield caused by soil management in lowland soils. A soybean crop was grown under four soil conditions: no-tillage (NT), chiseling (CH), ridge tillage on no-tillage (NTR), and ridge tillage on chiseling (CHR). Soil bulk density, total porosity, macro- and microporosity, air permeability, and saturated ...

The evolvable hardware literature reports several methods for the evolution of digital circuits. However, there is a large variability in the set of problems and the appropriate metrics used for the evaluation of the results. In this paper, we propose a set of representative problems to comparatively evaluate metaheuristics when designing Combinational Logic Circuits (CLCs). We also define a set of performance measurements and descriptive statistics to analyze the results found by the search techniques. ...

The elimination of microbial cells is one of the most critical steps in food processing. Conventional heating is the application of diffusive and convective heat mechanisms and is traditionally applied to assure food safety. However, such process is also harmful to others thermosensitive compounds, compromising desirable sensorial characteristics. The large temperature gradients caused by conventional heating result in lower thermal efficiency, overheated zones and high processing times. To overcome ...

Fungal spoilage in fruit juices is a currently relevant issue considering that recent reports have found unacceptable fungal levels even after traditional pasteurization processes. Ohmic heating demonstrated to be a good alternative process to conventional pasteurization, as it can promote higher heating rates and additional cell damage in some scenarios (nonthermal effects). However, the application of ohmic processing for fungi inactivation has not been properly investigated. The objective of this ...

The design of digital circuits using Cartesian Genetic Programming (CGP) has been widely investigated but the evolution of complex combinational logic circuits is a hard task for CGP. We introduce here a new mutation operator for CGP that aims to reduce the number of evaluations needed to find a feasible solution by modifying the subgraph of the worst output of the candidate circuits. Also, we propose a variant of the standard evolutionary strategy commonly adopted in CGP, where (i) the Single Active ...

ABSTRACT Sedimentation rates were determined with the 210 Pb method in eight sediment cores from Lake Constance. The rate of deposition in the main basin (Obersee) varies from about 0.06 g cm −2 y −1 in the central part to 0.13 g cm −2 y −1 in the eastern part of the lake and then increases rapidly towards the Rhine delta. In the central lake area the rate of deposition has been approximately constant since 1900, and dating with the 210 Pb method is in good agreement with sedimentological observations. ...

Electroporation is a cell-level phenomenon caused by an ionic imbalance in the membrane, being of great relevance in various fields of knowledge. A dependence of the pore formation kinetics on the environmental conditions (temperature and pressure) of the cell membrane has already been reported, but further clarification regarding how these variables affect the pore formation/resealing dynamics and the transport of molecules through the membrane is still lacking. The objective of the present study ...

The lithology found in this locality is consistent with that found in the Candelária Sequence. In June 2015, a cholera outbreak was declared in Juba, South Sudan. In addition to standard outbreak control measures, oral cholera vaccine (OCV) was proposed. As sufficient doses to cover the at-risk population were unavailable, a campaign using half the standard dosing regimen (one-dose) targeted high-risk neighborhoods and groups including neighbors of suspected cases. Traversodontidae is a less inclusive clade of cynognathian cynodonts that lived during the Triassic. Recently, a traversodontid from the southern Brazilian Triassic beds was described – Siriusgnathus niemeyerorum – based upon specimens found exclusively in its type-locality. In the present contribution, we describe the first specimens of S. niemeyerorum found outside its type- ...
