Optical biosensors based on localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) are the future of label-free detection methods. This work reports the development of plasmonic thin films, containing Au nanoparticles dispersed in a TiO2 matrix, as platforms for LSPR biosensors. Post-deposition treatments were employed, namely annealing at 400 °C, to develop an LSPR band, and Ar plasma, to improve the sensitivity of the Au-TiO2 thin film. Streptavidin and biotin conjugated with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) were ...

This paper reports, for the first time, the development of an analytical method employing modified matrix solid-phase dispersion (MSPD) for the extraction of CH3Hg(+) and Hg(2+) species from fish samples. Separation and determination of mercury species were performed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Important MSPD parameters, such as sample mass, type and mass of solid support, concentration of extraction solution (HCl and NaCl), and stirring time, were investigated by the ...

Soil pore structure characterization using 2-D image analysis constitutes a simple method to obtain essential information related to soil porosity and pore size distribution (PSD). Such information is important to infer on soil quality, which is related to soil structure and transport processes inside the soil. Most of the time soils are submitted to wetting and drying cycles (W-D), which can cause important changes in soils with damaged structures. This report uses 2-D image analysis to evaluate ...

The change in management practices of the sugarcane crop in Brazil, from the traditional trash burning before harvest to the new practice that leaves harvest residues on the field after harvest, can lead to alterations in the water regime and also in soil compaction levels. In this study a neutron-gamma surface gauge was used to monitor spatial and temporal variabilities of soil moisture and density in a experimental sugarcane area submitted to 3 harvest management practices: (i) mulched crop with ...

The quantification of soil water balance components was conducted in a sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) field differently managed, as well as a qualitative analysis of the methodologies used for their estimation. The study was conducted in randomized block experiment with four replicates and three treatments: bare soil, mulched soil using trash left on the soil surface after harvest, and soil with burnt trash. The soil was classified as a Rhodic Kandiudalf, locally called 'Terra Roxa Estruturada', ...

The effects of soil properties on crop growth and yield have traditionally been analyzed using classical statistics methodologies. These methodologies do, however, not consider sampling position coordinates and assume independence between samples. This study had the objective of using the state-space approach, which considers sampling position, to evaluate and to discuss a spatial process using variables related to the soil–plant system. For this, six data sets were collected in a sugarcane experiment ...

Soil water retention curves (SWRCs) relate soil water pressure head (h) to soil water content (θ) and can also be used to find information regarding soil pore distribution. To analyze SWRCs in relation to pore size distribution (PSD), changes due to wetting and drying (W–D) cycles were studied in three different tropical soils (Geric Ferralsol, GF; Eutric Nitosol, EN; Rhodic Ferralsol, RF), using three different treatments: T0, the control with samples not submitted to W–D cycles; T3, samples submitted ...

A gamma-ray computed tomography (CT) scanner was used to evaluate changes in the structure of clayey soil samples with surface compaction submitted to wetting and drying (W–D) cycles. The obtained results indicate that W–D cycles promoted an increasing of about 10% in soil porosity with a decreasing of about 6% in soil bulk density of this compacted region. With the use of the CT it was also possible to define the thickness of the compacted region that in our case was of about 8.19 mm. This last information ...

Humification of SOM was evaluated in the soil and its fractions (clay < 2 μm, silt 2–20 μm, sand 20–1000 μm). The obtained results show that lower SOM humification was observed in soil under NT, mainly at the ...

Soils from both treatments were investigated in 3 different depths, 0–10, 10–20, and 20–30 cm and matric potential values that varied from 0 to −780 kPa. The physical characteristics of the soil surface are of extreme importance in relation to energy and matter transfer processes between the atmosphere and the soil. Soil internal structure changes can be due to natural or artificial causes and one important natural process is the alternation of wetting and drying (W–D) processes, which induce swelling and shrinking of soil particles, causing modifications in pore size and shape. To study the consequence of these W–D events on possible modifications ...

The sustainability and efficiency of crop production are sometimes dependent on the adopted tillage system. In Brazil, conservation systems such as no-tillage (NT) have been adopted as an alternative to conventional tillage (CT) method. Conservation tillage systems usually tend to minimize soil losses, water runoff, preserve soil moisture and reduce the disruption of the soil structure. Nevertheless, the influence of these managements in the soil porous system, in the micrometric point of view, is ...

Porous systems such as soils tend to present great complexity when analyzed at the micrometer-scale. Processes such as tillage and repeated wetting and drying (W-D) cycles tend to continuously alter the structure of the soil. X-ray computed microtomography (μCT) is one of the techniques that can be utilized for quantifying changes in the soil micrometer-scale structure. The objective of this study was to analyze the effect of W-D cycles in the soil porous system of core samples submitted to contrasting ...

The cumulative distribution function (CDF) and its first derivative were employed for this task. However, the results presented here revealed that this approach can be used as an alternative for the exponential growth model, traditionally ...

Studies on how the alteration in the soil pore architecture can influence the permeability of small soil aggregates are still scarce. These aggregates affect the water dynamics mainly at the intra-aggregate pore scale. Thus, investigating the intra-aggregate pore space properties becomes crucial for comprehending the matter and energy transported into the soil. This paper focuses on analyzing the permeability and hydraulic conductivity of small soil aggregates from contrasting tillage systems (no- ...
