This study evaluated the effect of different N fertilizer application methods on N2O and CH4 emissions and on sugarcane biomass yields over two successive growing seasons. Treatments included three methods of N fertilizer (120 kg ha−1 N) application: 1) above the straw layer; 2) below the straw layer; 3) incorporated into the soil (at 0.1-m soil depth) below the straw layer; and 4) no N application (control). Sugarcane yield for the above straw treatment was, on average, 12% and 15% lower than below ...

Coastal ocean observing and modeling systems (coastal observatories), connected with regional and global ocean systems, improve the quality of information and forecasts for effective management of safe and sustainable maritime activities. The public availability of systematic and long-term information of the ocean is an engine for the Blue Economy, boosting economic growth, employment, and innovation. An overview of some Brazilian initiatives is presented in this paper, involving universities, private ...

The importance of stakeholder engagement in ocean observation and in particular the realization of economic and societal benefits is discussed, introducing a number of overarching principles such as the convergence on common goals, effective communication, co-production of information and knowledge and the need for innovation. A series of case studies examine the role of coordinating frameworks such as the US's Interagency Ocean Observing System (IOOS®), and the European Ocean Observing System (EOOS), ...

ABSTRACT The proper soil use and management are essential for a sustainable production, thus the pursuit for systems that minimize damages to the environment and improve soil fertility is continuous. The objective of this study was to evaluate changes in soil fertility by the use and management of an Oxisol (Latossolo Vermelho-amarelo, SiBCS) in the Amazon biome. The soil uses and management systems evaluated were native forest, native pasture, minimum tillage system and conventional tillage system. ...

The present work aims to evaluate the feasibility of iron ore tailings from tailing dams as an alternative material for road infrastructure. The iron ore tailings were characterized according to their chemical, mineralogical, environmental, and physical properties. Subsequently, the tailings were chemically stabilized using cement, lime, or steelmaking slag as binder. The tailing-cement, tailing-lime, and tailing-slag mixtures studied consisted of 1, 2, 5, and 10% binder content, each. The characterization ...

Ocular chemical burns are prevalent injuries that must have immediate and effective treatment to avoid complications. Aiming to improve bioavailability and efficacy, a poloxamer-based thermoresponsive in-situ gelling system containing hyaluronic acid and indomethacin was developed. Formulations with different polymeric proportions were screened through rheological measurements resulting in an optimized system (F2) with gelling temperature of 34.2 ± 0.11 °C. Its maximum viscosity varied from 77.33 mPa ( ...

Foliar fertilization is a potential tool to increase the use-efficiency of nitrogen (N) fertilizers. However, whilst leaf scorching has frequently been reported, the underlying physiological processes are not clear. In the present work, we investigate the intensity of leaf scorching as affected by the balance between ammonium assimilation and accumulation. Leaves were sprayed with urea–ammonium nitrate (UAN) solution without surfactant or applied liquid droplets of urea in different N concentrations ...

Oil spill events in the marine environment can have a deleterious impact on the affected ecosystems, such as coral reefs, with direct consequences for their socioeconomic value. The mutualistic relationship between tropical corals and their dinoflagellate symbionts (Symbiodiniaceae) provide structural and nutritional basis for a high local biodiversity in oligotrophic waters. Here, we investigated effects of crude oil water-accommodated fraction on the competitive fitness of the model zooxanthellae ...

Structural changes in phytoplankton communities have large influence on marine elemental cycling, food web dynamics and carbon export. Here we used data from two field expeditions, performed in spring and fall, over a coast-offshore gradient to investigate phytoplankton structure and dynamics in the Southwestern Tropical Atlantic (SWTA). Results revealed a predominant role of the thermohaline structure as the main driver of phytoplankton dynamics regardless the season. In fall, the thermocline and ...

Brazil is one of the largest consumers of pesticides in the world. The high rainfall rate and inadequate soil use and management promote the transfer of these compounds to the aquatic system. The aim of this study was to identify and quantify pesticides present in epilithic biofilms in order to evaluate the effectiveness of this matrix as a bioindicator able to discriminate areas and periods with different inputs of pesticides. Among the 25 pesticides analyzed in the biofilms, 20 compounds were ...

Planting cover crops as a strategy to enhance soil quality has been long adopted in several agroecosystem worldwide. Among the cover crops, some legume species are must chosen due to their abilities to fix atmospheric nitrogen (N) into the soil, which increases soil N availability for the cash crop planted subsequently. Our hypothesis was that planting a legume within the sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) renewal period can be adopted as a strategy to supply the N required for the sugarcane at planting. ...

A Bongo net (mesh sizes of 64 m, 120 m, and 300 m) was used for sample collections. A total of 462 zooplankton samples was studied. These samples were classified in four areas (Coastal, Inner Shelf, Shelf Break, Slope) according to local depth and distance from coast. Most of the studied environment is oligotrophic, under the Tropical Water mass influence. We recorded ...

One of the steps needed to achieve sustainable bioenergy is to reduce our reliance on synthetic nitrogen (N). Despite the fact that legume cover crops have the potential to increase soil quality and sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) yield, much information is still needed to determine amount of N available from cover crops to sequential ratoon cycles. This study was designed to assess the impacts of sunn hemp (Crotalaria spectabilis) cover crop on soil N dynamics and sugarcane ratoon response to N fertilization ...

At the mouth of the Amazon River, a widespread carbonate ecosystem exists below the river plume, generating a hard-bottom reef (∼9500 km2) that includes mainly large sponges but also rhodolith beds. The mesozooplankton associated with the pelagic realm over the reef formation was characterized, considering the estuarine plume and oceanic influence. Vertical hauls were carried out using a standard plankton net with 200 μm mesh size during September 2014. An indicator index was applied to express species ...

Abstract Animal manure is commonly used in agriculture as fertiliser. This practice could represent, however, a risk of soil degradation through the accumulation of pharmaceutical residues or resistant microorganisms. Thus, 12 pharmaceuticals (11 antibiotics and 1 nonsteroidal anti‐inflammatory drug) were quantified in soil samples from 15 sites regularly fertilised with different animal manures (dairy cow, pig or poultry litter manure) and from forest sites in southern Brazil. This study (a) investigated ...
