This paper examines the effects of preoxidation on the removal of iron during ilmenite reductive leaching. Oxidation of ilmenite was carried out at temperatures of 700 °C, 800 °C, 900 °C and 1050 °C for 6 h. The preoxidised ilmenite was leached using hydrochloric acid and iron powder as leaching and reductive agent, respectively. A test without iron powder was also conducted to determine the effect of iron. Ilmenite without oxidation was leached for comparison. Original ilmenite and solid products of ...

Two methods have been evaluated for the synthesis of zeolites using a UK fly ash as raw material. One method consists of a conventional hydrothermal technique in which fly ash is mixed with NaOH solution and the other comprises a combination of alkaline fusion of fly ash with NaOH prior to a hydrothermal treatment, where the fusion product is mixed with water. Both processes have been evaluated at different conditions of temperature, time and proportion of NaOH:PFA:H2O in order to optimise the synthesis. ...

Mondújar Castle is an Andalusi fortress located in the Valle de Lecrín (Granada, Spain). It had strategic importance in the final years of the Kingdom of Granada. The king Muley Hacén lived there before passing away, resulting in the popularisation of Romantic legends around its construction. Despite these folktales, the fortress has never been surveyed or restored and a complete architectural graphic study of this place is lacking. Therefore, it is essential to document the architectural heritage ...

A continuous-flow adsorption/desorption process for the recovery of phenolic compounds (PCs) from olive mill wastewaters (OMWs) was developed in a 0.53 m packed column, using a previously selected resin (Amberlite XAD16) and an actual OMW. The main goals of the study were (i) to evaluate the PC adsorption/desorption performances of XAD16 by means of adsorption isotherms and adsorption/desorption breakthrough tests, and (ii) to develop a reliable model of the process. A combination of centrifugation and ...

The goals of this work were (i) to compare two anion ion exchange resins (IRA958 Cl and IRA67) and a nonionic resin (XAD16) in terms of phenolic compounds adsorption capacity from olive mill wastewater and (ii) to compare the adsorption capacity of the best resin on columns of different length. The ion exchange resins performed worse than nonionic XAD16 in terms of resin utilization efficiency (20% versus 43%) and phenolic compounds/COD enrichment factor (1.0 versus 2.5). The addition of volatile fatty ...

Abstract BACKGROUND Olive mill wastewaters (OMWs) represent a major environmental concern due to their high organic load and phytotoxic activity. The selective recovery of phenolic compounds (PCs) from OMW is promising, thanks to the antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of PCs. The goal of this work was to perform a life cycle assessment (LCA) and cost–benefit analysis (CBA) of a full‐scale process of PC adsorption/desorption on resin Amberlite XAD16N. The industrial process was designed on the ...

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (SARS-CoV)-2 infection induces an exacerbated inflammation driven by innate immunity components. Dendritic cells (DCs) play a key role in the defense against viral infections, for instance plasmacytoid DCs (pDCs), have the capacity to produce vast amounts of interferon-alpha (IFN-α). In COVID-19 there is a deficit in DC numbers and IFN-α production, which has been associated with disease severity. In this work, we described that in addition to the DC deficiency, ...

Raman and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopies and circular dichroism (CD) have been applied to investigate the secondary structure of bombesin in the solid state and in phosphate buffer solution (pH 3.8). At concentrations around 10(-5) M, circular dichroism reveals that bombesin exists as an irregular or disordered conformation. However, the secondary structure of the peptide appears to be a mixture of disordered structure and intermolecular beta-sheets in 0.01 M sodium phosphate buffer ...

Abstract We describe a syndrome identified in three consanguineous families who had two and probably four common ancestors five generations ago. The syndrome is characterized by profound dysfunction of the central nervous system, silver‐leaden colored hair, abnormal melanosomes and melanocytes, and abnormal inclusion bodies in fibroblasts, bone marrow histiocytes and lymphocytes which appear to represent abnormal lysosomal bodies. Because of the biochemical relationships between melanin‐melanosomes ...

Different fatality rates among countries are probably due to non-standardized records being carried out by local health authorities. Biochars obtained at such conditions contain less functional groups but they are more effective for longer‐term soil C storage. Extracellular miRNAs are also found in most human biofluids including plasma.
