INTRODUCTION: Rates of breastfeeding in the US remain suboptimal. Public health campaigns encouraging breastfeeding have focused on health benefits for infants, despite over 60 years of data demonstrating breastfeeding reduces maternal risk of breast cancer with more recent data indicating breastfeeding lowers maternal risk of ovarian cancer, diabetes, hypertension and heart disease. METHODS: To assess awareness of the effects of lactation on maternal health, we used social media to recruit a prospective ...

Introduction Total dose iron (TDI) infusion therapy has been utilised for several years in our hospital but has previously necessitated multiple admissions or an overnight stay. Shorter duration agents have been introduced to try to alleviate this significant cost burden. Aims/Background Having recently introduced a short duration TDI infusion (Monofer©) as first-line parental iron therapy in our hospital, we undertook an audit to examine its efficacy and safety. Method We audited the notes of those who had received ...

Introduction Anaemia is prevalent in around 60% of colorectal cancer (CRC) patients, mostly due to iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) and typically treated with oral iron supplements. However, this may increase the availability of luminal iron to gut bacteria leading to bacterial growth. This may potentially promote microbial dysbiosis, favouring the growth of pathogenic bacteria at the expense of commensal bacteria. Many pathogenic bacteria have heightened iron acquisition mechanism which aid their virulence, which ...

This month's theme: Mast cell disorders About the coverThe involvement of mast cells (MCs) in allergy and anaphylaxis is widely recognized given that their granules contain histamine which, upon mast cell degranulation, is responsible for many of the clinical features of allergic reactions. It is now well appreciated that MCs also have either stored or de novo synthesized mediators including cytokines, chemokines, eicosanoids and lysosomal enzymes, to name but a few.It is currently thought that MCs ...
