The G-quadruplex is one of the most frequently studied secondary DNA structures and consists of 4 guanine residues that interact through Watson–Crick and Hoogsteen pairing. The G-quadruplex formation is thought to be a molecular switch for gene expression. Genome-wide analyses of G-quadruplexes have been published for many species; however, only one genome-wide analysis of G-quadruplexes in plants has been reported. Here, we propose a new approach involving a two-step procedure for identifying G- ...

Late-onset non-infectious pulmonary complications (LONIPCs) that arise beyond 3 months after allogeneic hematopoietic SCT include bronchiolitis obliterans (BO), bronchiolitis obliterans with organizing pneumonia (BOOP) and idiopathic pneumonia syndrome (IPS). We retrospectively analyzed the incidence and outcome of LONIPCs among pediatric hematopoietic SCT recipients. We included 97 patients who survived for more than 3 months among the 114 who underwent allogeneic hematopoietic SCT between April 1997 ...

In the present study we evaluated the feasibility of unrelated cord blood transplantation (UCBT) in patients with severe aplastic anemia (SAA). The outcome of 31 SAA patients (median age 28; range: 0.9-72.3 years old) who received UCBT was analyzed. The cumulative incidences of the neutrophil and platelet recovery after UCBT were 54.8 and 72.2%, respectively (95% confidence interval [CI] = 36.0%-70.3% and 51.3%-85.3%, respectively). The cumulative incidences of grade ≥II acute and chronic graft-versus-host ...

Leaf primordia are born around meristem‐containing stem cells at shoot apices, grow along three axes (proximal–distal, adaxial–abaxial, medial–lateral), and develop into flat symmetric leaves with adaxial–abaxial polarity. Axis development and polarity specification of Arabidopsis leaves require a network of genes for transcription factor‐like proteins and small RNAs. Here, we summarize present understandings of adaxial‐specific genes, ASYMMETRIC LEAVES1 ( AS1 ) and AS2 . Their complex (AS1–AS2) functions ...

In vitro generated human skin equivalents are generating interest as promising tools in basic study, as alternatives to animal testing, and for clinical applications in regenerative medicine. For prediction of skin irritation and corrosion, three-dimensional human skin equivalents consisting of differentiated human keratinocytes (KCs) have been developed and some models have been internationally accepted. However, more delicate assessments using full-thickness skin models, such as skin sensitization ...

Summary Juvenile myelomonocytic leukaemia ( JMML ) is a rare haematopoietic stem cell disease of early childhood, which can progress to blast crisis in some children. A total of 153 children diagnosed with JMML were reported to the Myelodysplastic Syndrome Committee in Japan between 1989 and 2007; 15 of them (9·8%) had 20% or more blasts in the bone marrow (blast crisis) during the disease course. Blast crisis occurred during observation without therapy ( n = 3) or with oral 6‐mercaptopurine treatment ( n = 9) ...

It is obvious that Space Education is very important for sustainable space development as children are going to lead the new era of space development. The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (thereafter called "JAXA") believes that all children hold 3 spirits which are "Curiosity", "Adventure" and "Craftsmanship". We have been trying to ignite children's spirits toward nature, life and the universe with the effective use of space subjects and materials since the establishment of the JAXA Space Education ...

Leaves develop as flat lateral organs from the indeterminate shoot apical meristem. The establishment of polarity along three-dimensional axes, proximal–distal, medial–lateral, and adaxial–abaxial axes, is crucial for the growth of normal leaves. The mutations of ASYMMETRIC LEAVES1 (AS1) and AS2 of Arabidopsis thaliana cause defects in repression of the indeterminate state and the establishment of axis formation in leaves. Although many mutations have been identified that enhance the adaxial–abaxial ...

Similar to the prostanoid-mediated inflammatory response in mammals, jasmonate-mediated wound response in plant leaves is inhibited by salicylic acid (SA) or acetylsalicylate (aspirin). In tobacco BY-2 cells, expression of the gene for ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) involved in putrescine synthesis is rapidly inducible by methyl jasmonate (MeJA). A nuclear gene for ODC isolated from tobacco, gNtODC-1, was an intron-less gene and MeJA induced the expression of a GUS fusion gene with the gNtODC-1 promoter ...

We studied the cytotoxic effects of antithymocyte globulin (ATG) in leukemic cells obtained from five patients with acute T lymphoblastic leukemia or precursor T lymphoblastic leukemia. ATG by itself killed leukemic cells in a dose-dependent manner. Simultaneous incubation with human AB or baby rabbit serum resulted in increased cytolysis of leukemic cells. These results suggested the presence of both direct and complement-mediated cytolysis. We also examined apoptotic cell death using Annexin-V. ...

Balanced development of adaxial and abaxial domains in leaf primordia is critical for the formation of flat symmetric leaf lamina. Arabidopsis ASYMMETRIC LEAVES1 (AS1) and AS2 proteins form a complex (AS1-AS2), which acts as key regulators for the adaxial development by the direct repression of expression of the abaxial gene ETTIN/AUXIN RESPONSE FACTOR3 (ETT/ARF3). Many modifier mutations have been identified, which enhance the defect of as1 and as2 mutations to generate abaxialized filamentous leaves ...

Categorization as a cytochrome P-450 (CYP) 2C19 poor metabolizer (PM) is reported to be an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. It is correlated with an increase in the circulating levels of high-sense C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) in women only, although its role in coronary microcirculation is unclear. We examined sex differences in the impact of the CYP2C19 genotype and low-grade inflammation on coronary microvascular disorder (CMVD). We examined CYP2C19 genotypes in patients with CMVD ( ...

ABSTRACT Although the DEAD-box RNA helicase family is ubiquitous in eukaryotes, its developmental role remains unelucidated. Here, we report that cooperative action between the Arabidopsis nucleolar protein RH10, an ortholog of human DEAD-box RNA helicase DDX47, and the epigenetic repressor complex of ASYMMETRIC-LEAVES1 (AS1) and AS2 (AS1-AS2) is critical to repress abaxial (ventral) genes ETT/ARF3 and ARF4, which leads to adaxial (dorsal) development in leaf primordia at shoot apices.
