Porosity and surface area analysis play a prominent role in modern materials science. At the heart of this sits the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) theory, which has been a remarkably successful contribution to the field of materials science. The BET method was developed in the 1930s for open surfaces but is now the most widely used metric for the estimation of surface areas of micro- and mesoporous materials. Despite its widespread use, the calculation of BET surface areas causes a spread in reported ...

Diagnostics is an important part of medical practice. The information required for diagnosis is typically collected by performing diagnostic tests, some of which include imaging. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is one of the most widely used and effective imaging techniques. To improve the sensitivity and specificity of MRI, contrast agents are used. In this review, the usage of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and composite materials based on them as contrast agents for MRI is discussed. MOFs are ...

Miniaturization is a key aspect of materials science. Owing to the increase in quality experimental and computational tools available to researchers, it has become clear that the crystal size and morphology of porous framework materials, including metal-organic frameworks and covalent organic frameworks, play a vital role in defining the physicochemical behaviour of these materials. However, given the multiscale and multidisciplinary challenges associated with establishing how crystal size and morphology ...

Abstract Structural variety, tunable porosity and opportunities for functionalization make metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) promising materials for applications in medicine as drug delivery systems. In this minireview, an overview of chemical stability of MOF nanocarriers at simulated body conditions is presented. Parameters such as a choice of buffer, pH value, nanoparticle size or surface modification are discussed, as well as analytical methods and approaches suitable to determine the material ...

Abstract Despite having a rich history as a poison, arsenic and its compounds have also gained a great reputation as promising anticancer drugs. As a pioneer, arsenic trioxide has been approved for the treatment of acute promyelocytic leukemia. Many in vitro studies suggested that arsenic trioxide could also be used in the treatment of solid tumors. However, the transition from bench to bedside turned out to be challenging, especially in terms of the drug bioavailability and concentration reaching ...

Electrically conductive metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) exhibit a large potential as working medium in next-generation electronic devices where electronic transport is paired with one or more other physicochemical properties. An important pathway in introducing electronic transport in MOFs is the postsynthetic incorporation of guest molecules in the porous host structures, where resulting host–guest interactions facilitate the creation of charge transport pathways. Here, we report the in-depth analysis ...

Abstract Although arsenic and its compounds are mainly known as a poison, they also found applications as drugs in medicine. However, their distribution in a therapeutic dose is often problematic due to their high toxicity. One possibility how to address this issue is utilizing drug‐delivery systems. Herein, we report on a metal‐organic framework (MOF) called Zn‐MOF‐74, which comprises Zn(II) ions and 2,5‐dihydroxybenzene‐1,4‐dicarboxylate ligands, as a drug nanocarrier of arsenic trioxide. We synthetized ...

Large Co-MOF-74 crystals of a few hundred micrometers were prepared by solvothermal synthesis, and their structure and morphology were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), IR, and Raman spectroscopy. The hydrothermal stability of the material up to 60 °C at 93% relative humidity was verified by temperature-dependent XRD. Proton conductivity was studied by impedance spectroscopy, using a single crystal. By varying the relative humidity (70–95%), temperature (21–60 °C), and orientation ...

Abstract Theragnostics represent a combination of therapy and diagnosis within one system. Herein, Fe 3 O 4 ‐ZIF‐8 core–shell nanoparticles are developed and suggested as candidates for theragnostic applications in cancer treatment. A drug loaded metal–organic framework ZIF‐8 (zeolitic imidazolate framework‐8) represents the therapeutic tool, while the Fe 3 O 4 core is included to enable the material visualization by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A reliable synthesis of Fe 3 O 4 ‐ZIF‐8 core–shell ...

A methodology is introduced for controlled postsynthetic thermal defect engineering (TDE) of precious group metal-organic frameworks (PGM-MOFs). The case study is based on the Ru/Rh analogues of the archetypical structure [Cu3(BTC)2] (HKUST-1; BTC = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate). Quantitative monitoring of the TDE process and extensive characterization of the samples employing a complementary set of analytical and spectroscopic techniques reveal that the compositionally very complex TDE-MOF materials result ...

Abstract Previous results revealed that arsenic trioxide might be used as promising therapeutic agent for the treatment of some solid tumours as atypical teratoid rhabdoid tumours (ATRT). However, in order to become an approved drug for solid tumour treatment, the active formulation has to get more efficient and feasible—but at the same time less toxic. One of the possibilities to achieve this dichotomy is to use nanomedicine tools. Herein, we report on the Zn‐based metal–organic framework ZIF‐8 ( ...

Herein we present a new proton-conducting iron(II) metal–organic framework (MOF) of an unusual structure formed by chains of alternating bistriazolate-p-benzoquinone anions and iron(II) cations with four axially coordinated water molecules. These chains assemble via π–π stacking between the aromatic units to form a three-dimensional grid-like network with channel pores filled with water molecules. The material was structurally characterized by single-crystal XRD analysis, and its water and thermal ...

One of the main problems of gas storage in porous materials is that many molecules of interest adsorb too weakly to be retained effectively. To enhance gas storage in metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), we propose the use of kinetic trapping, i.e., a process where the guest gas is captured in the voids at loading conditions and not released immediately at normal conditions. In this approach, the diffusion-limiting pore size and the framework flexibility have to be matched to the gas, requiring flexible ...

Scaling down the size of metal–organic framework (MOF) particles is a challenging but important task for extending the spectrum of potential MOF applications. Herein, we describe downsizing particles of MFU-4, a benzobistriazolate-based Zn(II)-MOF, which can be prepared by either solvothermal or microwave-assisted synthesis. We report on combining various synthetic strategies leading to a production of nanosized MOF crystals of well-defined sizes and shape. Our approaches include varying reaction ...

1-2-3 gel! Subcomponent self-assembly is introduced as a new design route towards multistimuli-responsive metallogels. It offers a rapid and facile access to supramolecular gels and allows to design smart materials with diverse functional and structural properties by simply exchanging one (or more) of the components. Herein, the exchange of the metal ions is emphasized (see scheme).

In this work, a steroidal gelator containing an imine bond was synthesized, and its gelation behavior as well as a sensitivity of its gels towards acids was investigated. It was shown that the gels were acid-responsive, and that the gelator molecules could be prepared either by a conventional synthesis or directly in situ during the gel forming process. The gels prepared by both methods were studied and it was found that they had very similar macro- and microscopic properties. Furthermore, the possibility ...

Critical structural switch: A small initial difference in the angle within bidentate ligands (see scheme) is amplified into an incommensurable difference in the resultant structures (M12L24 or M24L48). This molecular-level emergent behavior was predicted from the empirical threshold of the ligand bend angle, determined by a ligand mixing experiment, for the critical M12L24/M24L48 switchover.
