The decay of $_{56}^{148}\mathrm{Ba}_{92}$ to levels of odd-odd $_{57}^{148}\mathrm{La}_{91}$ has been studied in experiments where $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray singles, time-dependent $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray spectra, and $\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}t$ coincidence spectra were collected. The $^{148}\mathrm{Ba}$ activity was produced directly by on-line mass separation. The half-life of $^{148}\mathrm{Ba}$ was determined to be 0.61\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.03 s. A level scheme containing 26 levels and ...

The deformed nucleus $^{148}\mathrm{Ba}$ (populated in $^{148}\mathrm{Cs}$ decay) is the heaviest Z=56 and the lightest N=92 nucleus known; thus its levels are extrapolations of both Z and N systematics. Values for E${(2}_{1}^{+}$), E${(4}_{1}^{+}$)/E${(2}_{1}^{+}$), and E${(2}_{2}^{+}$) are in excellent agreement with interpolative predictions from systematics of the valence-nucleon product ${N}_{\mathrm{p}{N}_{\mathrm{n}}}$.
