Collagen (JC) was extracted from jellyfish (Rhopilema esculentum) and hydrolyzed to prepare collagen hydrolysate (JCH). The protective effects of JC and JCH against UV-induced damages to mice skin were evaluated and compared in this article. JC and JCH could alleviate the UV-induced abnormal changes of antioxidative indicators, including the superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and catalase (CAT) activities and the contents of glutathione (GSH) and malondiaidehyde (MDA). JC and JCH ...

Abstract BACKGROUND: Jellyfish collagen was hydrolysed with trypsin and properase E, and jellyfish collagen peptide (JCP) was purified from the enzymatic hydrolysate using ion exchange chromatography and gel filtration. The antioxidant activity of JCP in a linoleic acid emulsion system, its superoxide anion‐ and hydroxyl radical‐scavenging activities and its copper‐chelating ability were evaluated in vitro . Initial investigations of JCP's ability to inhibit melanogenesis were carried out using cultured ...

Body wall protein from the sea cucumber (Acaudina molpadioidea) was hydrolyzed sequentially with bromelain and alcalase. The hydrolysate was fractionated into two ranges of molecular weight (PH-I, >2 kDa; PH-II, <2 kDa) using an ultrafiltration membrane bioreactor system. The PH-II brought about a high angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activity. An ACE inhibitory peptide was isolated from the PH-II, using the chromatographic methods including gel filtration, ion-exchange chromatography ...

Danshensu (3-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl) lactic acid), a natural phenolic acid, is isolated from Salvia miltiorrhiza root, and is the most widely used traditional Chinese medicine for the treatment of various cardiovascular diseases. It has been reported to have potential protective effects from oxidative injury. However, there is a little information about its possible toxicity. In this study, acute and subchronic toxicity of danshensu in mice and rats have been evaluated. In the acute study, danshensu ...

This study aimed to assess the anti-nociceptive and anti-inflammatory activity of sophocarpine in rodents. The anti-nociceptive effect was evaluated in two experimental animal models and anti-inflammatory effect in three animal models, and sophocarpine was given by tail vein injection for the above study. Pretreatment with a single dose of sophocarpine (20 and 40 mg/kg) produced dose-dependent anti-nociceptive effects in thermally and chemically induced mouse pain models. Pretreatment with a single ...

Gelatin was extracted from Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus) skin and hydrolysed sequentially with pepsin and alkaline protease. The hydrolysates were fractionated into two ranges of molecular weight (PEP1: 2000 Da < Mr < 6000 Da; PEP2: Mr < 2000 Da) using ultrafiltration membranes. In this present study, we investigate the protective effects of both polypeptides against ultraviolet radiation-induced skin photoaging by the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), catalase (CAT) ...

The aim of this paper was to investigate the critical aggregation concentration and aggregation number of acid-soluble collagen from walleye pollock (Theragra chalcogramma) skin using the fluorescence probe pyrene. Results showed that pyrene was fit for studying the aggregation behaviour of collagen in sodium phosphate buffer at pH 7.2. The plots of the pyrene I1/I3 ratio, as a function of the logarithm of total collagen concentration, revealed a typical sigmoidal decrease, the critical aggregation ...

Gelatin gels were cross-linked by gallic acid and rutin. The gel strength, viscoelastic properties, thermal stability, swelling property, ultrastructure, X-ray diffraction patterns and FTIR spectra were determined to evaluate the physicochemical properties of the modified gels. The gel strength increased with increasing gallic acid concentration up to 20 mg/g dry gelatin, and then decreased at further elevated gallic acid concentration, while it continuously increased with increasing levels of rutin. ...

To obtain hydrolysates with high nitrogen recovery (NR) and low-bitterness, Alaska pollock frame (APF) was treated by high-pressure cooking at 120 °C for 30 min and hydrolyzed with ten different commercial proteases. MEAP (Mixed enzymes for animal proteolysis) hydrolysates exhibited the best characteristics (high NR and low bitter taste), which had high content of oligopeptides with molecular mass lower than 1355 Da. The optimum hydrolysis conditions using MEAP were determined as follows: temperature ...

We tested cross-species amplification of 68 existing microsatellite loci in 6 species of the Sparidae family: Acanthopagrus butcheri, Sparus aurata, Pagrus auratus, Chrysophrys major, Pagellus bogaraveo, Pagellus erythrinus and one species of Bothidae, Paralichthys olivaceus. Of the 68 loci screened, sixteen were found to be polymorphic when tested in 20 individual black sea bream, Acanthopagrus schlegeli. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 2 to 9, and the observed and expected heterozygosity ...

Gelatin extracted from squid (Dosidicus eschrichitii Steenstrup) skin was hydrolysed with pepsin to prepare Angiotensin-I-Converting Enzyme (ACE) inhibitory peptide. The ACE-inhibitory activity was measured by spectrophotometric assay. The hydrolysate was fractionated into three ranges of molecular weight (6 kDa < HSSG-I < 10 kDa, 2 kDa < HSSG-II < 6 kDa, HSSG-III < 2 kDa) using an ultrafiltration unit. The HSSG-III showed the most potent ACE inhibitory activity in vitro with IC50 of 0.33 mg/ml. Renovascular ...

Fucoidans extracted from brown algae represent an intriguing group of natural fucose-enriched sulfated polysaccharide, with excellent anticoagulant, antimetastatic, antiangiogenic and anti-inflammatory activities. In the present study, we compared antithrombotic activities of four fucoidan fractions with different molecular weight and sulfated ester content from Laminaria japonica in an electrical induced arterial thrombosis and their potential mechanism underlying such activity.
