Background and aims Experimental data suggest that the HLA-DQ2 gene dose has a strong quantitative effect on clinical outcomes and severity of celiac disease (CD). We aimed to conduct a meta-analysis with systematic review to investigate the association between HLA-DQB1*02 gene doses and the characteristics of CD. Methods We searched seven medical databases for studies discussing HLA-DQB1 gene dose in CD and various disease characteristics, such as clinical presentation, histology, age at diagnosis, ...

Neutrophil Extracellular Traps (NETs), a web-like structure of cytosolic and granule proteins assembled on decondensed chromatin, kill pathogens and causes tissue damage in diseases. Whether NETs can kill cancer cells is unexplored. Here, we report that a combination of glutaminase inhibitor CB-839 and 5-FU inhibits the growth of PIK3CA mutant colorectal cancers (CRCs) in xenograft, syngeneic, and genetically engineered mouse models in part through NETs. Disruption of NETs by either DNase I treatment ...

The in-hospital survival of patients suffering from acute pancreatitis (AP) is 95% to 98%. However, there is growing evidence that patients discharged after AP may be at risk of serious morbidity and mortality. Here, we aimed to investigate the risk, causes, and predictors of the most severe consequence of the post-AP period: mortality.A total of 2613 well-characterized patients from 25 centers were included and followed by the Hungarian Pancreatic Study Group between 2012 and 2021. Despite the occurrence of HER2 amplification/overexpression (HER2+) in ~3% to 5% of all patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) and up to ~10% of patients with RAS/BRAF wild-type mCRC, there are currently no FDA- or EMA-approved HER2-directed therapies for HER2+ mCRC. Patients with mCRC who progress on early lines of chemotherapy regimens receive limited clinical benefit from current standard-of-care treatments. Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis (S. Enteritidis) is the major contaminant of poultry products, and its ability to form biofilms on produced food and poultry farm processing surfaces contributes to Salmonella transmission to humans. Bacteriophages have come under increasing interest for anti-Salmonella biofilm control. In this study, we used the three previously sequenced and described phages UPWr_S1, UPWr_S3, and UPWr_S4 and a phage cocktail, UPWr_S134, containing these three phages to degrade ...

The administration of allogeneic natural killer (NK) cells following a lymphodepleting chemotherapy regimen is emerging as a well-tolerated therapeutic approach in the management of various malignancies. Contrary to the expected complications of allogeneic T cell therapy, there remains no evidence of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) mediated by NK cells in numerous clinical trials. On the contrary, preclinical and clinical studies suggest that NK cells do not induce GVHD and in fact may prevent its ...

Abstract Pancreatic necrosis is a consistent prognostic factor in acute pancreatitis (AP). However, the clinical scores currently in use are either too complicated or require data that are unavailable on admission or lack sufficient predictive value. We therefore aimed to develop a tool to aid in necrosis prediction. The XGBoost machine learning algorithm processed data from 2387 patients with AP. The confidence of the model was estimated by a bootstrapping method and interpreted via the 10th and ...

Abstract Xerosis, commonly referred to as dry skin, is a common dermatological condition affecting almost a third of the population. Abstract Background Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a potentially severe or even fatal inflammation of the pancreas. Early identification of patients at high risk for developing a severe course of the disease is crucial for preventing organ failure and death. Most of the former predictive scores require many parameters or at least 24 h to predict the severity; therefore, the early therapeutic window is often missed. Methods The early achievable severity index (EASY) is a multicentre, multinational, prospective ...
