Koi herpesvirus (KHV), an emerging pathogen causing mass mortality in koi and common carp, possesses the largest known herpesvirus genome of 295 kbp predicted to encode 156 different proteins. However, none of them has been identified or functionally characterized up to now. In this study, a rabbit antiserum was prepared against a bacterial fusion protein that permitted detection of the predicted type III membrane protein encoded by ORF81 of KHV. In Western blot analyses, the abundant ORF81 gene ...

Abstract The Red Queen hypothesis predicts that host–parasite coevolutionary dynamics can select for host resistance through increased genetic diversity, recombination and evolutionary rates. However, in haplodiploid organisms such as the honeybee ( Apis mellifera ), models suggest the selective pressure is weaker than in diploids. Haplodiploid sex determination, found in A. mellifera , can allow deleterious recessive alleles to persist in the population through the diploid sex with negative effects predominantly ...

Impairment of visual function is one of the major symptoms of people with multiple sclerosis (pwMS). A multitude of disease effects including inflammation and neurodegeneration lead to structural impairment in the visual system. However, the gold standard of disability quantification, the expanded disability status scale (EDSS), relies on visual assessment charts. A more comprehensive assessment of visual function is the full contrast sensitivity function (CSF), but most tools are time consuming and ...

The results of the oxidation of 6‐ or 8‐methoxy‐indolines are shown in schemes 3 and 4 , respectively. Analogous ‘dimeric’ dehydrogenation products are observed when tetrahydroquinolines ( ...

Varroa destructor is a highly virulent ectoparasitic mite of the honey bee Apis mellifera and a major cause of colony losses for global apiculture. Typically, chemical treatment is essential to control the parasite population in the honey bee colony. Nevertheless a few honey bee populations survive mite infestation without any treatment. We used one such Varroa mite tolerant honey bee lineage from the island of Gotland, Sweden, to identify quantitative trait loci (QTL) controlling reduced mite reproduction. ...

ABSTRACT Homologues of the UL7 gene of herpes simplex virus type 1 are conserved in alpha-, beta-, and gammaherpesviruses. However, little is known about their functions. Using a monospecific rabbit antiserum raised against a bacterial fusion protein, we identified the UL7 gene product of the neurotropic alphaherpesvirus pseudorabies virus (PrV). In Western blot analyses of infected cells and purified PrV particles the serum specifically detected a 29-kDa protein, which matches the calculated mass ...

The ectoparasitic mite Varroa destructor is an invasive species of Western honey bees (Apis mellifera) and the largest pathogenic threat to their health world-wide. Its successful invasion and expansion is related to its ability to exploit the worker brood for reproduction, which results in an exponential population growth rate in the new host. With invasion of the mite, wild honeybee populations have been nearly eradicated from Europe and North America, and the survival of managed honeybee populations ...

pH-sensitive fluorescent proteins are widely used to study synaptic vesicle (SV) fusion and recycling. When targeted to the lumen of SVs, fluorescence of these proteins is quenched by the acidic pH. Following SV fusion, they are exposed to extracellular neutral pH, resulting in a fluorescence increase. SV fusion, recycling and acidification can thus be tracked by tagging integral SV proteins with pH-sensitive proteins. Neurotransmission is generally activated by electrical stimulation, which is not ...
