briefly described and discussed. The lack of postorbital bars, prefrontals and postorbitals, the presence of wide frontals, weak temporal arches, a low and restricted parietal crest, and postcanines with four cusps in line provided, at least in the uppers, with an incipient bifurcation of the roots, indicate a level of organization suitable for ancestry to the Mammalia. It bears neither a dentary-squamosal joint nor a cingulum in the known postcanines.

Abstract We synthesize and discuss available isotopic data on Holocene guanaco samples from southern South America, extending from Tierra del Fuego Island to northern Patagonia and the Pampean region. We evaluate temporal and spatial tendencies on the basis of 91 samples (mainly based on δ13Ccollagen values), presenting implications for paleodietary research in archaeology. We conclude that there are no strong correlations with latitude in the macro-spatial scale, while there is a set of interesting ...

Abstract We present an archaeological study of hunter‐gatherer home ranges on the basis of two lines of evidence. Firstly, we discuss information related to the mobility of individuals, which was approached by stable isotope studies. Secondly, we present data related to the transport and discard of artefacts, since the distribution of these items may be determined by the movement of people. Our main goal is to integrate these two lines of research in the analysis of an archaeological case from southern ...

Interactions between human societies and the environment that they inhabit have been a controversial topic in archaeology for at least the past fifty years. Currently, modern theoretical approaches take this subject as a key issue in their research agenda. This paper presents a review of the main outcomes of several archaeological and multidisciplinary South American projects related to this theme. The case-studies discussed here are all located within arid settings, and can be grouped into three ...

Abstract Different lines of archaeological research have been developed in order to increase our knowledge of the history of the hunter‐gatherer societies that inhabited the western Pampas of central Argentina, South America, during the Late Holocene. Recently, stable isotope data from human remains have been included. This paper presents the first group of δ 13 C and δ 15 N results obtained for this region. On this basis we identify spatial and chronological patterns that may have interesting implications ...

The goals of these experiments were to efficiently deliver aerosolized adeno-associated virus (AAV) vector to the lungs of Rhesus macaques and to measure gene transfer and expression. To determine optimal lung deposition, we compared four techniques of delivering aerosolized saline admixed with the radioisotope 99mtechnetium (99mTc) nebulized through a mouthpiece (Neb Oral), a laryngeal airway mask (Neb LMA), or an endotracheal tube (Neb ETT), or bronchoscopically delivered by Microsprayer (PennCentury). ...

Abstract In vitro response of T (CD3+, CD4+ and CD8+), B (CD19+) and NK (CD56+) peripheral blood lymphocytes to the mitogens PHA, PWM and IL-2, respectively, were compared in three groups of children: non-infected well-nourished, well-nourished infected and malnourished infected children. This response was measured by analysing the expression of the early activation antigen CD69 by three-color flow cytometry. All T lymphocyte subsets of malnourished infected children showed impaired activation capability, ...

The aim of this study was to assess DNA repair capacity in lymphocytes of children with protein calorie malnutrition using the single-cell gel electrophoresis (comet) assay. Repair capacity was assessed by estimating the relative decrease of DNA migration length 5, 15, 30, and 60 min after hydrogen peroxide treatment, in three groups of children: well-nourished (WN), well-nourished infected (WN-I), and malnourished infected (MN-I). In addition, the DNA migration length was evaluated in all groups before ...
