By phase fluorometry, the fluidity of bilayers is characterized by a static and a dynamic parameter. A comparative study of vesicles prepared with polyglycerol monoalkylethers and polyethoxylated analogues shows that the fluidity is not only affected by hydrocarbon chain length but also by polar head structure.

The sodium counterion of the surfactant AOT (sodium bis-(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate) has been replaced by calcium, magnesium, zinc and aluminum ions. In reverse micellar aggregates of these surfactants in heptane, acidity induced by these cations, at low water content, is revealed by an acid-sensitive optical probe (2′,7′-dichlorofluorescein). The magnitude of this effect parallels the hydrolysis rate of triethylorthobenzoate. A strong catalytic effect is observed with zinc and aluminum counterions. ...

Absorption spectra, emission spectra, lifetime, and emission anisotropy of 2-naphthol have been measured in solutions of sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate (AOT) in heptane. In the absence of water, the changes in absorption spectrum obtained on increasing AOT concentration, allowed us to determine the binding constant between 2-naphthol and AOT and this was found to be 335 ± 10. Water solubilization in AOT reversed micelles induces a decrease in the binding constant and/or a modification of the ...

The synthesis of lanthanum phosphates in molten LiCl-KCL eutectic was chosen to address the preliminary treatment of chlorinated wastes containing fission products that are already present in a Li/Cl eutectic. The obtained monazite compound shows interesting properties to be considered as a good candidate to trap lanthanum for a long-time. The synthesis route based on LaCl(3) reaction with NH(4)H(2)PO(4) in a stoichiometric amount is a key point to obtain monazite as a pure phase. Hence, the salt ...

Steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence studies of 4-methylumbelliferone in acidic ethanol—water and 1-butanol—water mixtures reveal that one water molecule is involved in the rate-limiting step of the phototautomerization process. It is shown that the intermediate species cannot be the cationic form as stated by other authors, but is most likely the anionic form. Moreover, it is concluded that the phototautomer is not zwitterionic but exists only in the neutral keto form. A biprotonic transfer ...

Spinel cobalt oxide nanoparticles have been nanocasted inside the pores of a SBA-15 silica using the "two solvents" technique, which implies that the silica is pre-wetted with an alkane solvent before loading the pores with an aqueous solution carrying the precursor, a nitrate salt, of the desired particle composition. TEM analysis of the samples, comparing the effect of four different solvents (n-pentane, n-hexane, n-heptane and cyclohexane), showed that the nanoparticles' size, shape and dispersion ...

The precipitation of rare earth phosphates (RE = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, and Lu), from RECl3 was investigated in molten LiCl–KCl eutectic at 500 °C in air. Ammonium dihydrogenphosphate (NH4H2PO4) was used as the phosphorus precursor. X-ray diffraction analysis indicated the formation of compounds with monazite (La, Ce, Pr, and Nd) or xenotime (Lu) structures. 31P NMR spectroscopy measurements confirmed that lanthanum formed pure monazite, which indicates a LaCl3 → LaPO4 conversion factor near 100%. These results ...

The interaction between SBA-15 mesoporous silica, alkane solvents, and water has been studied to understand the mechanism of the so-called double solvent technique. This method facilitates the loading of the pores of SBA-15 with a metal oxide precursor solution, by prewetting the SBA-15 with an alkane. In a previous study on cobalt oxide, it has been observed that differences in particle size, shape, and dispersion were obtained as a function of the solvent used (n-pentane, n-hexane, n-heptane, and ...

Because of its high incorporation capacity and of the high thermal neutron capture cross-section of hafnium, Hf-zirconolite (CaHfTi2O7) ceramic can be envisaged as a potential waste form for minor actinides (Np, Am, Cm) and plutonium immobilization. In this work, Nd-doped Hf-zirconolite Ca1−xNdxHfTi2−xAlxO7 (x = 0; 0.01 and 0.2) ceramics have been prepared by solid state reaction. Neodymium has been used as trivalent actinide surrogate. The ceramic samples structure has been studied by X-ray diffraction ...

The environment of Nd3+ ions has been studied using optical absorption spectroscopy and EXAFS at the Nd L3-edge, in a series of soda lime aluminoborosilicate glasses with increasing B2O3 content. The proportion of BO4 units has been determined by 11B MAS NMR in an equivalent glass series with La3+ ions replacing the majority of Nd3+ ions, and complementary information has been obtained by measuring the Nd3+ decay fluorescence times in these latter glasses. In these glasses with low Al2O3 content, ...

AbstractNew nuclear highly durable glass compositions, able to immobilize a higher concentration of high-level nuclear wastes than current borosilicate nuclear glasses, are being studied. Investigations are performed on rare earth (RE)-rich glasses, known as durable matrices. After a preliminary study on complex and simplified compositions, a basic glass composition was selected and studied (wt%): 51.0 SiO2–8.5 B2O3–12.2 Na2O–4.3 Al2O3–4.8 CaO–3.2 ZrO2–16.0 RE2O3. In this system and beyond the solubility limit, rare‐earths ( RE ) elements are reported to form apatite phases with the general formula Ca 2 RE 8 ( SiO 4 ) 6 O 2 . In the current study, speciation of these trivalent RE 3+ cations in both amorphous network and crystal ...

The results of a small angle neutron scattering experiment are reported in which the structural properties of a novel water/AOT/cyclohexane reverse micelle system is investigated. The metallic ions bound to AOT are Al3+ and Zn2+. Spectra were collected at different water contents and at the maximum surfactant concentration. A quantitative evaluation of the shape and size of the droplets formed is performed, and a comparison among similar shapes is presented.

A water soluble β-cyclodextrin (CD-NA) bearing seven naphthoyl chromophores forms very stable 1:1 complexes with a merocyanine laser dye DCM-OH (4-(dicyanomethylene)-2-methyl-6-(p-(bis(hydroxyethyl)amino)styryl)-4H-pyran). The antenna effect, i.e. energy transfer from the naphthoyl antenna chromomophores to the encased dye, is shown to occur with 100% efficiency. The stability of the complexes is very high (Ks ≈ 105) owing to the contribution of the naphthoate residues. The structural features of the ...

The photophysical properties of 6-methoxyquinoline (6MeOQ) and 6-hydroxyquinoline (6HQ) in organic solvents and in neutral, acidic, and alkaline aqueous solutions have been studied by picosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. The dynamics of photoinduced tautomerization by excited state proton transfer(s) arising in the case of 6HQ has been analyzed. Hydroxyl deprotonation of the cationic (quinolinium) form in acidic solution (pH 1.5) is 1 order of magnitude faster (τdp ∼ 2.2 ps) than imine protonation ...

Abstract Considering the interest of developing new glass matrices able to immobilize higher concentration of high level nuclear wastes than currently used nuclear borosilicate compositions, glasses containing high rare earth contents are of particular interest. This study focuses on a peraluminous aluminoborosilicate system SiO2–B2O3–Al2O3–Na2O–CaO–Nd2O3 defined by a peralkaline/peraluminous ratio RP = ([Na2O] + [CaO])/([Na2O] + [CaO] + [Al2O3])

The hexadentate tripodal ligand O-TRENSOX (already known as a siderophore), incorporating three 8-hydroxy-5-sulfoquinoline (8-HQS) subunits, was investigated as a potential fluorogenic ligand of Al(III) and Ga(III). For the sake of comparison, every chelation study was also carried out with n-BUSOX, a ligand similar to one arm of O-TRENSOX. Chelations were studied at the optimal pH for fluorescence emission: pH = 4 for Al(III) and pH = 2 for Ga(III). An outstanding 'tripod' effect is exhibited by the values ...
