Recognition and acceptance of a suitable host plant by phytophagous insects requires the integration of visual, physical and chemical cues. The present study investigates the host cues that a specialist insect integrates to optimize oviposition decisions and whether these cues are weighted in a specific way. The study also determines whether the tomato fruit borer Neoleucinodes elegantalis (Guenée) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), an important pest on Solanaceae in Brazil, shows a preference for oviposition ...

Background: The main objective of the present systematic review is to identify potential risk factors for adverse drug reactions (ADRs) through prospective cohort studies in pediatric inpatients. Methods: The data search was done in the following electronic databases PubMed/MEDLINE; Scopus; LILACS and Web of Science from the earliest record until 31 May 2015. Two reviewers independently screened each study and one of them assessed the methodological quality according to the Newcastle–Ottawa scale ...

The present study aims to identify the risk factors for adverse drug reactions (ADR) in pediatric inpatients.A prospective cohort study in one general pediatric ward in a hospital in Northeast Brazil was conducted in two stages: the first stage was conducted between August 17th and November 6th, 2015, and the second one between March 1st and August 25th, 2016. We included children aged 0-14 years 11 months hospitalized with a minimum stay of 48 hours. Observed outcomes were the ADR occurrence and ...

Epitranscriptomics has gained ground in recent years, especially after the advent of techniques for accurately studying these mechanisms. Among all modifications occurring in RNA molecules, N6-methyladenosine (m6A) is the most frequent, especially among mRNAs. m6A has been demonstrated to play important roles in many physiological processes and several disease states, including various cancer models (from solid to liquid tumors). Tumor cells’ epitranscriptome is indeed disrupted in a way to promote ...

Decreased renal cell cancer-related mortality is an important societal goal, embodied by efforts to develop effective biomarkers enabling early detection and increasing the likelihood of curative treatment. Herein, we sought to develop a new biomarker for early and minimally invasive detection of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) based on a microRNA panel assessed by ddPCR.Plasma samples from patients with RCC (n = 124) or oncocytomas (n = 15), and 64 healthy donors, were selected. Hsa-miR-21-5p, hsa-miR-126- ...

The postnatal period is the ideal time to deliver interventions to improve the health of both the newborn and the mother. However, postnatal care shows low-level coverage in a large number of countries. The objectives of this study were to: 1) investigate inequities in maternal postnatal visits, 2) examine differences in postnatal care coverage between public and private providers and 3) explore the relationship between the absence of maternal postnatal visits and exclusive breastfeeding, use of ...

Pterospartum tridentatum (L.) Willk., Gomphrena globosa L. and Cymbopogon citratus (DC) Stapf. are examples of medicinal plants with antioxidant properties on their own, but that can be improved when mixed. In the present work, the antioxidant activity and phenolic compounds were determined in the infusions prepared from the individual plants, and from mixtures of these plants in different proportions. P. tridentatum > C. citratus > G. globosa was the order observed for antioxidant efficacy, which can ...

Pterospartum tridentatum (L.) Willk, Gomphrena globosa L., and Cymbopogon citratus (DC.) Stapf are medicinal plants that require a more detailed chemical characterization, given the importance of their consumption as infusions. Therefore, the individual profiles in tocopherols, free sugars, and organic acids were obtained by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled to different detectors (fluorescence, refraction index, and photodiode array, resp.). C. citratus revealed the highest content ...

The present study describes a novel mechanical process for the pigmented parts of Gomphrena globosa L. The effects of the variables of the maceration extraction of betacyanins have not been properly described. Therefore, this study also aims to optimize the conditions that maximize betacyanins extraction from G. globosa as an alternative source. Assisted by response surface methodology, an experimental design was developed for testing the extraction variables (time, temperature, ethanol-water proportion ...

Gomphrena globosa L. is a source of betacyanins, molecules with high colorant power. In order to replace conventional extraction techniques, microwave (MAE) and ultrasound assisted extraction (UAE) processes were optimized by the response surface methodology (RSM) to maximize the recovery of betacyanins from G. globosa. A five-level full factorial design of 24 combinations and 4 replicates was implemented for MAE and UAE. The optimum processing conditions for MAE (t = 8 min; T = 60 °C; Et = 0%; and S/L = 5 g/ ...

The normal intestinal microbiota plays a major role in the maintenance of health and disease prevention. In fact, the alteration of the intestinal microbiota has been shown to contribute to the pathogenesis of several pathological conditions, including obesity and insulin resistance, among others. Recent studies have revealed profound alterations of the gut microbial flora in patients and animals with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Alterations in the composition of the microbiome in CKD may contribute ...

In this study, we presented the most commonly employed net photosynthetic light-response curves (P N/I curves) fitted by the Solver function of Microsoft Excel. Excel is attractive not only due to its wide availability as a part of the Microsoft Office suite but also due to the increased level of familiarity of undergraduate students with this tool as opposed to other statistical packages. In this study, we explored the use of Excel as a didactic tool which was built upon a previously published paper ...

Abstract Some constituents and structures in the mixtures obtained by reaction of oxygen with model compounds of 1,4‐polyisoprene in the presence of phenylhydrazine ( 1 ) could be identified. Accelerated oxidation of monomeric units 2 of 1,4‐polyisoprene by phenyl radical generation (reaction of 1 with oxygen) and in situ decomposition of hydroperoxides, allow to explain the formation of epoxidized and hydroxylated units which were identified. Identification of phenylsubstituted alcohols and phenyl ketones ...

We report the effect of incorporation of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) on the mechanical, structural, optical and electrochemical properties of diamond-like carbon (DLC) thin films. The DLC/MWCNT hybrid composite was deposited onto stainless steel and quartz substrates by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition at low temperature (∼100°C). Raman spectra of DLC/MWCNT film have characteristics from both DLC and MWCNT. The optical bandgap energy decreases with the incorporation of nanotubes. ...

Novel treatment options are needed for testicular germ cell tumor (TGCT) patients, particularly important for those showing or developing cisplatin resistance, the major cause of cancer-related deaths. As TGCTs pathobiology is highly related to epigenetic (de)regulation, epidrugs are potentially effective therapies. Hence, we sought to explore, for the first time, the effect of the two most recently FDA-approved HDAC inhibitors (HDACis), belinostat and panobinostat, in (T)GCT cell lines including those ...

Germ cell tumors (GCTs) are developmental cancers, tightly linked to embryogenesis and germ cell development. The recent and expanding field of RNA modifications is being increasingly implicated in such molecular events, as well as in tumor progression and resistance to therapy, but still rarely explored in GCTs.
