Abstract Social work faculty and practitioners have long argued the definition and parameters of the advanced generalist concept. This article explores the concept of generalist-advanced generalist in practice and in education and advances a paradigm for framing the Bachelor of Social Work-Master of Social Work educational continuum. It further argues that the generalist-advanced generalist continuum is particularly well suited to practice in small towns and rural areas. It further argues that the ...

A total of 5,230 paired blood cultures were studied. One sample was divided between aerobic and anaerobic BacT/Alert standard bottles, and the other divided between aerobic and anaerobic BacT/Alert FAN bottles. There were 44 occasions where Staphylococcus aureus was recovered only from the FAN bottles, compared to six where only the standard bottles were positive (p < 0.001), and 21 occasions where Escherichia coli was isolated only from FAN bottles, compared to eight occasions where only the standard ...

Justin Gibbs, Barry R. Bowers,

Significant tornadoes (EF2+) make up a very small percentage of the total United States tornado events, but produce the overwhelming majority of tornado fatalities. Identifying significant tornado events in a shortfused warning environment has been a particular focus of the United States National Weather Service’s severe weather program in recent years, with the goal of reducing the loss of life from significant events to the greatest extent possible. This study aims to further this effort by identifying ...

Ion channel regulation by cyclic AMP and protein kinase A is a major effector mechanism for monoamine transmitters and neuromodulators in the CNS. Surprisingly, there is little information about the speed and kinetic limits of cAMP–PKA‐dependent excitability changes in the brain. To explore these questions, we used flash photolysis of caged‐cAMP (DMNB‐cAMP) to provide high temporal resolution. The resultant free cAMP concentration was calculated from separate experiments in which this technique was ...

Barry Gibb, Victoria Wykes, John Garthwaite,

Physiological nitric oxide (NO) signal transduction occurs through activation of guanylyl cyclase (GC)‐coupled receptors, resulting in cGMP accumulation. There are five possible receptors: four heterodimers ( α 1 β 1, α 2 β 1, α 1 β 2, α 2 β 2) and a presumed homodimer ( νβ 2). The present study investigated the kinetic and pharmacological properties of all these putative receptors expressed in COS‐7 (or HeLa) cells. All exhibited NO‐activated GC activity, that of α 1 β 1 and α 2 β 1 being much higher ...

Barry Gibb, John Garthwaite,

Abstract Despite the widespread use of nitric oxide as a signalling molecule in the central nervous system, the molecular makeup of its receptor, soluble guanylyl cyclase (sGC), therein is poorly understood. Accordingly, RT‐PCR and in situ hybridization were used to identify sGC subunits expressed in rat brain. In addition to the expected mRNA for α1 and β1 subunits, message for the β2 subunit was detected in the cerebellum at all developmental stages investigated (1–150 days postnatum). The use of ...

Abstract: Ser 55 within the head domain of neurofilament light chain (NF‐L) is a target for phosphorylation by protein kinase A. To understand further the physiological role(s) of NF‐L Ser 55 phosphorylation, we generated transgenic mice with a mutant NF‐L transgene in which Ser 55 was mutated to Asp so as to mimic permanent phosphorylation. Two lines of NF‐L(Asp) mice were created and these animals express the transgene in many neurones of the central and peripheral nervous systems. Both transgenic ...
