Indole-diterpenes are a structurally diverse group of secondary metabolites with a common cyclic diterpene backbone derived from geranylgeranyl diphosphate and an indole group derived from indole-3-glycerol phosphate. Different types and patterns of ring substitutions and ring stereochemistry generate this structural diversity. This group of compounds is best known for their neurotoxic effects in mammals, causing syndromes such as 'ryegrass staggers' in sheep and cattle. Because many of the fungi ...

Summary While much is known about the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites by filamentous fungi their biological role is often less clear. The assumption is these pathways have adaptive value to the organism but often the evidence to support this role is lacking. We provide the first genetic evidence that the fungal produced secondary metabolite, peramine, protects a host plant from insect herbivory. Peramine is a potent insect feeding deterrent synthesized by Epichloë/Neotyphodium mutualistic ...

A group of slowly growing photochromogenic mycobacteria was isolated from Chesapeake Bay striped bass ( Morone saxatilis ) during an epizootic of mycobacteriosis. Growth characteristics, acid-fastness and 16S rRNA gene sequencing results were consistent with those of the genus Mycobacterium . Biochemical reactions, growth characteristics and mycolic acid profiles (HPLC) resembled those of Mycobacterium shottsii , a non-pigmented mycobacterium also isolated during the same epizootic. Sequencing of the 16S ...

Summary An assessment of the neonate's behavioral responses should be a part of every pediatric examination. A behavioral assessment reflects the capacity for integration of the central and autonomic nervous systems and therefore is a window to the wellbeing of the newborn. In order to fully understand and evaluate the significance of the newborn's behavior, it is essential to put this examination into context by a complete prenatal and perinatal history. Behavioral assessments of the newborn are ...

Using the ac Josephson effect, we have determined that $\frac{2e}{h}=483.5912\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.0030$ MHz/\ensuremath{\mu}V. The implications of this measurement for quantum electrodynamics are discussed as well as its effect on our knowledge of the fundamental physical constants.

The Josephson frequency-voltage relation in superconduction's $\ensuremath{\nu}=\frac{2eV}{h}$ has been tested by measuring frequency-voltage ratios in Josephson junctions using three different Josephson-effect phenomena: (1) microwave emission from evaporated-film tunnel junctions, (2) microwave-induced quantum voltages in evaporated-film tunnel junctions, and (3) microwave-induced current steps in the $I\ensuremath{-}V$ characteristics of evaporated-film tunnel junctions and of "weak-link" point-contact ...

Selective pulmonary phlebography before and after infusion of serotonin has graphically demonstrated active in vivo pulmonary venomotion for the first time. The evidence of venous constriction was of two types: (1) decreased retrograde pulmonary venous, capillary, and arterial filling, and (2) distinct changes in the caliber of the veins, with kinking and narrowing. These findings add further weight to the accumulating evidence of other types which indicates that the pulmonary veins are not merely ...

Young novice drivers are at considerable risk of injury on the road. Their behaviour appears vulnerable to the social influence of their parents and friends. The nature and mechanisms of parent and peer influence on young novice driver (16–25 years) behaviour was explored via small group interviews (n = 21) and two surveys (n1 = 1170, n2 = 390) to inform more effective young driver countermeasures. Parental and peer influence occurred in pre-Licence, Learner, and Provisional (intermediate) periods. Pre-Licence ...

Background: Volitional risky driving behaviours such as drink- and drug-driving (i.e. substance-impaired driving) and speeding contribute to the overrepresentation of young novice drivers in road crash fatalities, and crash risk is greatest during the first year of independent driving in particular. Aims: To explore the: (1) self-reported compliance of drivers with road rules regarding substance-impaired driving and other risky driving behaviours (e.g., speeding, driving while tired), one year after ...

Bridie Scott‐Parker, Barry C. Watson, Mark King, Melissa K. Hyde,

For decades there have been two young driver concepts: the ‘young driver problem’ where the driver cohort represents a key problem for road safety; and the ‘problem young driver’ where a sub-sample of drivers represents the greatest road safety problem. Given difficulties associated with identifying and then modifying the behaviour of the latter group, broad countermeasures such as graduated driver licensing (GDL) have generally been relied upon to address the young driver problem. GDL evaluations ...

While there is research indicating that many factors influence the young novice driver's increased risk of road crash injury during the earliest stages of their independent driving, there is a need to further understand the relationship between the perceived risky driving behaviour of parents and friends and the risky behaviour of drivers with a Provisional (intermediate) licence. As part of a larger research project, 378 drivers aged 17–25 years (M = 18.22, SD = 1.59, 113 males) with a Provisional licence ...

Young novice drivers experience significantly greater risk of being injured or killed in car crashes than older more experienced drivers. This research utilised a qualitative approach guided by the framework of Akers' social learning theory. It explored young novice drivers' perspectives on risky driving including rewards and punishments expected from and administered by parents, friends, and police, imitation of parents' and friends' driving, and advantages and disadvantages of risky driving. Twenty- ...
