Abstract We introduce unitary-gate randomized benchmarking (URB) for qudit gates by extending single- and multi-qubit URB to single- and multi-qudit gates. Specifically, we develop a qudit URB procedure that exploits unitary 2-designs. Furthermore, we show that our URB procedure is not simply extracted from the multi-qubit case by equating qudit URB to URB of the symmetric multi-qubit subspace. Our qudit URB is elucidated by using pseudocode, which facilitates incorporating into benchmarking applications.

Elizabeth F. Nagle, Mary Ellen Sanders, Barry A. Franklin,

High-intensity interval training (HIIT) has emerged as an attractive alternative to traditional continuous exercise training (CT) programs for clinical and healthy populations who find that they can achieve equal or greater fitness benefits in less time. Land-based HIIT may not be an appropriate choice for some participants. Few studies have explored the acute responses and chronic adaptations of HIIT in an aquatic environment, and no study has compared the cardiometabolic responses of an aquatic- ...

At a concentration of 10μg/ml, mild vasoconstriction occurred, increasing tension 1.9 ± 0.1 % above baseline. Vasodilation began to occur at 30 μg/ml and was maximal at 2,000 μg/ml, reducing tension 97.5 ± 0.2% below baseline. ...

This study investigated factors contributing to the maximum height achieved by divers after takeoff from the 3m springboard. Twelve elite male divers and 12 elite female divers competing in the 1986 Australian National Championships were filmed using high-speed cinematography. Kinematic and kinetic data for the takeoff phase were derived from the digitized film. Variables analyzed included center of gravity (CG) displacement and velocity, the acceleration of the CG relative to the springboard, and ...

Tyrosine phosphorylation plays a critical role in regulating cellular function and is a central feature in signaling cascades involved in oncogenesis. The regulation of tyrosine phosphorylation is coordinately controlled by kinases and phosphatases (PTPs). Whereas activation of tyrosine kinases has been shown to play vital roles in tumor development, the role of PTPs is much less well defined. Here, we show that the receptor protein tyrosine phosphatase delta (PTPRD) is frequently inactivated in glioblastoma ...

Ross Sanders, Barry D. Wilson,

This study investigated changes in kinematics as subjects adapted to a change of surface compliance in a drop jumping task. It was hypothesised that changes in the pattern of centre of gravity acceleration with respect to the surface would be associated with improved performance. Six subjects performed 200 trials on a hard surface and then 190 trials on a compliant (sprung) surface. There was considerable improvement in height achieved (0.12 m to 0.41 m) by subjects during the sprung surface trials. ...

We examined the effects of administration of two hypothalamic neurohormones, TRH and GnRH, for 3 days in five anemic male dialysis patients and five age-matched normal male volunteers. Patients on chronic hemodialysis have abnormal hypothalamo-hypophyseal thyroid and gonadal functions, including blunted TSH response to TRH, hyperprolactinemia, elevated basal levels of LH with exaggerated response to GnRH, and depressed FSH secretory response to GnRH. After correction of anemia with exogenous erythropoietin, ...

Matricellular proteins such as SPARC, thrombospondin 1 and 2, and tenascin C and X subserve important functions in extracellular matrix synthesis and cellular adhesion to extracellular matrix. By virtue of its reported interaction with collagen I and deadhesive activity on cells, we hypothesized that hevin, a member of the SPARC gene family, regulates dermal extracellular matrix and collagen fibril formation. We present evidence for an altered collagen matrix and levels of the proteoglycan decorin ...

A learning control architecture which uses a multi-layer feed forward neural network with error back propagation is described. The architecture includes a feed forward estimator which is pre-trained and a feedback controller which continues to learn. The properties of the architectures are investigated through a series of experiments, and the application of the prototype adaptive controllers is described. To examine the performance of this controller, square wave demand signals are applied to the ...

The Notch signaling pathway has become recognized as a vitally important pathway in regulating proliferative/differentiative decisions and cell fate. To explore the involvement of the Notch pathway in adult gut, we investigated the expression of Notch receptors and their ligands by Northern blotting and in situ hybridization. Notch receptors and ligands were expressed in both proliferative and post-mitotic cells throughout adult rat gut, variously in epithelial, immune, and endothelial cells. Expression ...
