Patients with chronic pain who frequent emergency departments present a challenge to health care providers. Mental health, substance abuse, and pain issues are difficult to distinguish in fast-paced clinical settings, and significant symptoms may remain unaddressed. This pilot study sought to determine whether electronically delivered screening tools measuring pain and mood could identify areas to target for improving emergency care.A prospective, descriptive pilot study used repeated measures of ...

Introduction No clear consensus exists regarding the most appropriate approach to reducing repetitive ED visits for pain complaints. These visits create a burden on health care resources and may contribute to inappropriate and excessive use of opioid medications. The purpose of this study was to examine the pain management program in 1 emergency department (1) to determine whether ED visits significantly decreased among program enrollees; (2) to quantify program interventions applied to enrollees; and (3) to explore ...

David French, Bill Ballantyne, Archie Crail,
Critics who viewed David French’s three earlier plays about the Mercer family as a “trilogy” will no doubt be expanding it to a “tetralogy” with the appearance of 1949. But this play makes very clear what should have been evident before: the Mercer plays do not constitute a unified saga portraying the fortunes of a single family through time, but are rather a set of variations on a theme, in which French’s family myth is embodied in a series of plays of different styles and involving different characters, ...

DAVIS & BARBOUR (1965) found that echolocating bats may utilize visual cues even when reliable, supra-threshold echolocation cues are available. The present experiment obtained a similar effect using a simultaneous discrimination paradigm. Ten Myotis lucifugus were rewarded with food for responding to a large-white triangle, but were not rewarded when they responded to a small-black triangle. The bats were given 20 trials each day until they achieved a criterion of 17 correct responses out of 20. They ...

Echolocating bats (Eptesicus fuscus)were trained on a brightness discrimination task. It was found that the ability of these bats to discriminate luminance differences at a fixed dim ambient illumination compares to that of rats and mice. The mean Weber ratio for four different standard-comparison stimulus sets was 0.85. When tested under varying conditions of ambient illumination, it was found that brightness discrimination sensitivity was optimal at about 10.44 lx. Sensitivity for distinct luminance ...
