Abstract This paper evaluates the Robertson-Stiff rheological model for cement slurries and drilling muds. The model is compared with the Herschel-Bulkley model and is found to be an improved model for cement slurries. The Robertson-Stiff equations for volumetric flow rates in narrow annuli and tubes are shown to be limited to fluids with no yield stress. This paper develops more general equations that include the Robertson-Stiff results as special cases. Introduction In a recent paper, Robertson ...

The expansive and shrinkage characteristics of oilwell cements under actual well conditions of temperature and pressure have been measured by a highly sensitive device especially developed for the purpose. In tests using the device it was learned that some cements may experience an initial shrinkage during the first few hours after the cement has set. Introduction Because of the desire to achieve better well completions, the expanding characteristics of oilwell cements have been a subject of interest ...

Summary During the last few decades, several laboratory investigations and field studies have been conducted in an attempt to find solutions to the problem of gas migration after primary or remedial cement jobs. This article reviews the primary or remedial cement jobs. This article reviews the general findings of previous investigators and offers an updated explanation of the mechanism of gas migration. Results of our laboratory studies show that "mobility" of the fluids in the pore spaces during ...

Summary A method to scale down well parameters to laboratory conditions for more realistic testing of cement recipes to be used to control wellbore invasion/migration of formation fluids after cementing is introduced. The scale-down procedure proposed here addresses a worst-case scenario. It assumes that the offending gas zone (source of the invading gas) has enough permeability, thickness, and gas volume to invade fully and to pressure-charge the cemented annulus (cement column), if conditions allow. ...

Summary This paper describes a comprehensive circulation and shut-inwell-temperature-profile simulator capable of accounting for free fall duringcementing operations. The program can predict temperatures during circulation of drilling mud in a well or during cementing. The system can also simulateperiods of shut-in at any point during a given run. The simulator was verifiedby use of exact analytical solutions to certain problems. Comparison of simulator runs with field-measured well-temperature ...

Beverage quality is a complex attribute of coffee (Coffea arabica L.). Genotype (G), environment (E), management (M), postharvest processing, and roasting are all involved. However, little is known about how G × M interactions influence beverage quality. We investigated how yield and coffee leaf rust (CLR) disease (caused by Hemileia vastatrix Berk. et Br.) management affect cup quality and plant performance, in two coffee cultivars. Sensory and chemical analyses revealed that 10 of 70 attributes and 18 ...

Understanding agronomic traits at a genetic level enables the leveraging of this knowledge to produce crops that are more productive and resilient, have better quality and are adjusted for consumer preferences. In the last decade, rice has become a model to validate the function of specific genes, resulting in valuable but scattered information. Here, we aimed to identify particular genes in rice related to traits that can be targeted by different mutation techniques in the breeding of crops. We ...

Summary Postanalysis often cannot be applied because of lack of prediction and real-time performance data. Proper postevaluation includes collection of actual job performance data and comparison with predicted cementing performance. A comprehensive cementing simulator is required that accounts for fluid properties, well geometry, changing displacement and mud return rates, and the free-fall effect. Such a simulator has been used successfully in the design of many cementing operations and quite frequently ...

Abstract Background Alzheimer’s disease (AD) remains as one of the major challenges for the neuroscientific community today. It affects approximately 50 million cases worldwide, with a total cost estimation of $290 billion in 2019 (Alzheimer’s Association, 2019). The pathophysiological hallmarks of AD are amyloid beta plaques (Aβ) and neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs). Nevertheless, the underlying mechanism have yet to be elucidated (Mehta et al., 2017). Recent efforts have demonstrated that non‐receptor ...

The lack of knowledge about biological communities residing in soils, especially those in tropical regions, represents a constraint to management practices to take advantage of the ecological services provided by soil microbiota to agroecosystems. One of the complexities derived from describing biological diversity in such tropical conditions comes from the methods used to isolate microorganisms without altering the composition of the sample. The goal of this study was to establish a protocol for ...

Introduction. Sustainable farming requires new tools for the control of pathogens, since there is a constant evolution to overcome the current biological and chemical strategies. The information provided by the transcriptomics allows creating new possibilities to tackle the pathogens. It is possible to interrupt the genetic expression of a pathogen and disable it using RNA interference (RNAi). Objective. To perform an analysis of an emerging technology useful for pest control, based on RNA interference. ...

Summary Since the introduction of free-fall models for primary cementing, several companies have been monitoring cementing operations by continually measuring the rate of returns, the rate of pumping, the density of the fluids pumped, the density of the fluids returned to the surface, and the surface pressure.' Measured values of surface pressure and rate of returns have been compared to predicted values obtained with cementing simulators. 1–7 Discrepancies between measured and simulated behaviors ...

Summary Studies were conducted with a large-scale displacement model containing manmade tar and competent (hard) manmade sandstone formations. This paper investigates the cement placement process and the acoustic response with standard logging tools. This investigation revealed that the formations behind the cement make a significant contribution to the pipe-attenuation rate. The large-scale acoustic experiments indicate that lower pipe-attenuation-rate levels are measured when tar formations are ...

What is living in a city where the damages of the civil war (1975-1990) are still visible for its inhabitants? The description of the use of memory in a wounded district of Beirut aims to analyze the construction of urban temporalities in connection with the period of the Lebanese wars (1975-1990). The city space is approached here as the frame of everyday life and common and ordinary practices. It constitutes both a support and a vector of the expressions of memory. By creating monuments or by forgetting ...
