Holthuis was so kind to inform us, the above name was already proposed in 1897 by Jordan & Evermann (1896: 488) for a genus of fishes, and our generic name thus is pre occupied. A photographic map was made of polytene chromosomes of ovarian nurse cells of Anopheles bellator females. The chromosomes of this species have complete or partial homology with those of A. cruzii, mainly in the telomeric and centromeric regions. Variability at the single band level was observed as asymmetric bands at seven different positions. One inversion (3Ra) was detected in the 3R arm.

Anopheles bellator is a small silvatic bromelia-breeding mosquito and is a primary human malaria vector species in Southern Brazil. The bromelia-breeding habitat of the species should accompany the Atlantic forest coastal distribution, where bromeliads are abundant. New research concerning Anopheles bellator in the southeast of the State of São Paulo, Brazil, are reported. Adult females of this mosquito showed remarkable endophily and endophagy which was even greater than An. cruzii. The epidemiological role of this anopheline as a malaria vector is discussed.

Immature stages of Anopheles bellator and of An. argyritarsis were found in artificial containers. The great number of on-returnable containers now produced, may be playing an important role in the increase in the number of available breeding places for culicid mosquitoes.

The eggs of Anopheles cruzii and An. bellator are described and illustrated using scanning electron micrographs. Hatching was observed, and larval exit documented. No morphological differences were found between the eggs of the two species.
