The AEP to the repetitive stimuli of the Wilkinson auditory vigilance task was compared between untreated patients with narcolepsy-cataplexy and matched controls for periods during which the tones were preceded by 13 sec or more of wakefulness (defined by EEG-polygraphic criteria). During these periods it had been found previously that narcoleptics did not perform worse than did controls. The AEP, nevertheless, showed significant differences for narcoleptics. These were similar to changes described ...

This study presents an overview of options aiming to reduce emissions to air, soil and water from an aluminium die casting plant located in Portugal. We identify eighteen pollution reduction options and then estimate their potential to reduce the pollution, and the costs associated with their implementation to the die casting plant. The different types of options considered include typical end-of-pipe solutions, as well as alternative techniques or modifications in process operations of the plant. ...

To localize different prostaglandin E2 receptors in rat retinas of varying age, deduce how they are affected by acute stress insult, and determine whether the negative effect of ischemia/reperfusion is attenuated by the EP2 agonist butaprost. methods. Ischemia was induced by the elevation of intraocular pressure. Butaprost was injected intravitreally immediately after ischemia. Standard methods were used for recording of electroretinograms (ERGs) and processing of immunohistochemistry. Extracts ...

Abstract The tyrant flycatchers represent a monophyletic radiation of predominantly insectivorous passerine birds that exhibit a plethora of stereotyped prey capture techniques. However, little is known about their retinal organization. Using retinal wholemounts, we estimated the total number and topography of neurons in the ganglion cell layer in the generalist yellow‐bellied elaenia ( Elaenia flavogaster ) and the up‐hover‐gleaner mouse‐colored tyrannulet ( Phaeomyias murina ) with the optical fractionator ...

It is concluded from immunohistochemical that all four types of prostaglandin-E2 (PGE2) (EP1, EP2, EP3 and EP4) receptors are associated with specific cell-types in primary rat retinal cultures. Analysis specifically of EP2 receptor immunoreactivity shows it to coexist with some neurones expressing Thy-1 and calbindin immunoreactivities as well as with vimentin-positive Müller cells. Moreover, exposure of cultures to the EP2 specific agonist butaprost (100 nM) for a period of 24 h results in a generation ...

The expression of glutamate decarboxylase forms, GAD-65 and GAD-67, in GABAergic cells was studied by immunocytochemistry in the retina of the New World monkey, Cebus apella . In the innermost rows of the inner nuclear layer (INL), somata that express GABA correspond to about 45% of the total number of cells in the central retina and about 25% on the periphery. Three subsets of GABAergic amacrine cells were identified along the horizontal meridian: about 5% express only GAD-65 and 40% GAD-67, and approximately ...

The currently assessed V–B phase diagram indicates a peritectoid formation at 1727 °C (V3B4+VB⇔V5B6) for the V5B6 boride. The observation of this phase in several as-cast V–B alloys has lead us to a systematic evaluation of its stability, specially its possible formation from the liquid. In this work, V–B alloys (52–56 at.% B range) were produced through arc melting and heat-treated under high vacuum at 2000 °C for 2 h. The materials in both as-cast and heat-treated conditions were characterized through ...

EGCG, a major component of green tea, has a number of properties which includes it being a powerful antioxidant. The purpose of this investigation was to deduce whether inclusion of EGCG in the drinking water of albino rats attenuates the effect of a light insult (2200lx, for 24h) to the retina. TUNEL-positive cells were detected in the outer nuclear layer of the retina, indicating the efficacy of the light insult in inducing photoreceptor degeneration. Moreover, Ret-P1 and the mRNA for rhodopsin ...

Cortical spreading depression (CSD) propagation was investigated in rats under dietary essential fatty acid (EFA) deficiency over two generations (F1 and F2). Wistar rat dams received diets containing 5% fat either from coconut-oil (EFA-deficient) or soybean-oil (control). F1-pups received their dams' diets until the day of CSD recording (30-40 days or 90-100 days). F2-pups were kept on their F1 dams' diet until 30-40 days. Compared to the controls, the EFA-deficient group had reduced (P < 0.05) body weights ...

This study describes a model (MIKADO) to analyse options to reduce the environmental impact of aluminium die casting. This model will take a company perspective, so that it can be used as a decision-support tool for the environmental management of a plant. MIKADO can be used to perform scenario analyses to analyse the impact on the environment of different strategies, while taking into account both economical and ecological consequences of decision-making. The MIKADO approach is based on relevant ...

The development and maturation of sensory systems depends on the correct pattern of connections which occurs during a critical period when axonal elimination and synaptic plasticity are involved in the formation of topographical maps. Among the mechanisms involved in synaptic stabilization, essential fatty acids (EFAs), available only through diet, appear as precursors of signaling molecules involved in modulation of gene expression and neurotransmitter release. Omega-3 fatty acids, such as docosahexaenoic ...

White wheat bread is a poor source of dietary fiber, typically containing less than 2%. A demand exists for the development of breads with starch that is slowly digestible or partially resistant to the digestive process. The utilization of maize flour and resistant starch is expected to reduce the release and absorption of glucose and, hence, lower the glycemic index of bread. This study was undertaken to investigate the hypothesis that a diet of maize bread, as produced and consumed in Portugal, ...

Tyrant flycatchers comprise the largest group of passerine birds of the Neotropical region but their retinal organization is unknown. The great kiskadee, Pitangus sulphuratus, is categorized as a supreme generalist and utilizes a variety of foraging strategies. The rusty margined flycatcher, Myiozetetes cayanensis, is partially frugivorous and captures insects in the air. Using retinal wholemounts, we described the topographic distribution of density and size of neurons ...

During migraine attacks, patients generally have photophobia and phonophobia and seek for environments with less sensorial stimulation. Present work aimed to quantify cortical partial directed coherence (PDC) of electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings from migraine patients and controls in occipital, parietal, and frontal areas with or without photic stimulation. Our hypothesis is that migraine patients with visual aura might have neuronal networks with higher coherence than controls even in interictal ...

Oxidative stress (OS) has been implicated in the etiology of certain neurodegenerative disorders. Some of these disorders have been associated with unbalanced levels of essential fatty acids (EFA). The response of certain brain regions to OS, however, is not uniform and a selective vulnerability or resilience can occur. In our previous study on rat brains, we observed that a two-generation EFA dietary restriction reduced the number and size of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra (SN) rostro- ...
