Chronic atrial fibrillation (cAF) is associated with atrial contractile dysfunction. Sarcomere remodeling may contribute to this contractile disorder. Here, we use single atrial myofibrils and fast solution switching techniques to directly investigate the impact of cAF on myofilament mechanical function eliminating changes induced by the arrhythmia in atrial myocytes membranes and extracellular components. Remodeling of sarcomere proteins potentially related to the observed mechanical changes is also ...

Abstract Background Couple-based interventions (CBIs), despite strong efficacy in improving numerous HIV risk behaviors, are not widely available and have not been tested to improve women’s antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence. We examined barriers and facilitators to participation in a CBI based on cognitive behavioral couple therapy for women’s ART adherence in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Methods Semi-structured interviews were conducted with women with HIV ( n = 15) and men of mixed HIV status ( n = ...

Interventions led by peer recovery specialists (PRSs) have rapidly expanded in response to a global shortage of access to substance use treatment. However, there is a lack of guidance on how to incorporate PRSs' lived experience into the delivery of evidence-based interventions (EBIs). Moreover, few resources exist to assess fidelity that integrate both content fidelity, peer competence, and incorporation of lived experience (i.e., PRS role fidelity). This study aimed to: (1) describe a novel PRS fidelity ...

Abstract Background South Africa has the highest number of people with HIV (PWH) globally and a significant burden of co-occurring substance use disorder (SUD). Health care worker (HCW) stigma towards SUD is a key barrier to HIV care engagement among PWH with SUD. Support from peers—individuals with lived experience of SUD—may be a promising solution for addressing SUD stigma, while also improving engagement in HIV care. We evaluated the perceived acceptability of integrating a peer role into community- ...

Heavy scintillation glass of Gd2O3-Al2O3-SiO2 composition doped with Ce, combining high light yield and fast scintillation kinetics, was developed. The glass samples were prepared at 1500 °C by a melt-quench technique; the resulting glass was colorless and satisfactorily homogeneous. A photoluminescence study showed that a variety of sites for the Ce3+ ion stabilization exists in the glass, but the phenomenon was found less pronounced compared to BaO-Gd2O3-SiO2 glass. The glass has demonstrated ∼4 ...

The first images of Jupiter's moon Europa from the Voyager missions sparked the curiosity about the lineament system appearing at the surface. Curiosity quickly turned into profound interest, following the discovery of its subsurface ocean, which may harbour life below the thick ice crust. This study revisits Europa and reinvestigates its surface using high-resolution Galileo data and mapping one of its most characteristic surface patterns: the complex network of lineaments. The analysis of the ...

South Africa (SA) has the highest number of people living with HIV (PLWH) globally, and a significant burden of alcohol and other drug use (AOD). Although integrating AOD treatment into HIV care may improve antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence, this is not typically routine practice in SA or other low-resource settings. Identifying interventions that are feasible and acceptable for implementation is critical to improve HIV and AOD outcomes.A pilot randomized hybrid type 1 effectiveness-implementation ...

Abstract Background Substance use is prevalent in South Africa and associated with poor HIV treatment outcomes, yet, it is largely unaddressed in HIV care. Implementing an evidence-based, task-shared intervention for antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence and substance use integrated into HIV care may be a feasible and effective way to improve HIV treatment outcomes and reduce substance use in this population. Methods Guided by the RE-AIM framework, a randomized, hybrid type 1 effectiveness-implementation ...

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and problematic alcohol use are two ongoing and interconnected epidemics in South Africa, with untreated problematic alcohol use associated with poorer HIV treatment outcomes and disease progression. A lack of trained mental health providers is a primary barrier to increasing access to evidence-based treatment in this setting. To address this gap, we integrated evidence-based intervention components for problematic alcohol use and antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence, ...

Abstract Background We systematically reviewed implementation research targeting depression interventions in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) to assess gaps in methodological coverage. Methods PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and EMBASE were searched for evaluations of depression interventions in LMICs reporting at least one implementation outcome published through March 2019. Results A total of 8714 studies were screened, 759 were assessed for eligibility, and 79 studies met inclusion criteria. ...

Instabilities arise in a number of flow configurations. One such manifestation is the development of interfacial waves in multiphase flows, such as those observed in the falling liquid film problem. Controlling the development of such instabilities is a problem of both academic interest and industrial interest. However, this has proven challenging in most cases due to the strong nonlinearity and high dimensionality of the underlying equations. In the present work, we successfully apply Deep Reinforcement ...

During morphogenesis, cells communicate with each other to shape tissues and organs. Several lines of recent evidence indicate that ion channels play a key role in cellular signaling and tissue morphogenesis. However, little is known about the scope of specific ion-channel types that impinge upon developmental pathways. The Drosophila melanogaster wing is an excellent model in which to address this problem as wing vein patterning is acutely sensitive to changes in developmental pathways. We conducted ...

Romantic long-distance relationships (LDRs) are becoming increasingly prevalent as individuals seek educational and employment opportunities across the globe. LDRs create unique challenges for couples, potentially impacting couple and individual well-being. It is important to understand efforts that LDR partners make to stay engaged, known as relationship maintenance behaviors (RMBs), and whether common RMBs facilitate or hinder relational and individual functioning. This study has two goals: (a) to ...

Mutations that disrupt the inwardly rectifying potassium channel Kir2.1 lead to Andersen-Tawil syndrome that includes periodic paralysis, cardiac arrhythmia, cognitive deficits, craniofacial dysmorphologies and limb defects. The molecular mechanism that underlies the developmental consequences of inhibition of these channels has remained a mystery. We show that while loss of Kir2.1 function does not affect expression of several early facial patterning genes, the domain in which Pou3f3 is expressed ...

This study represents an effectiveness study and service evaluation of a cognitive behavioral, couple‐based treatment for depression ( BCT ‐D) provided in London services that are part of the “Improving Access to Psychological Therapies” ( IAPT ) program in England. Twenty‐three therapists in community clinics were trained in BCT ‐D during a 5‐day workshop, followed by monthly group supervision for 1 year. The BCT ‐D treatment outcome findings are based on 63 couples in which at least one partner was depressed ...

Women in South Africa who use alcohol and other drugs face multiple barriers to HIV care. These barriers make it difficult for women to progress through each step in the HIV treatment cascade from diagnosis to treatment initiation and adherence. This article provides a rationale and empirical support for providing couple-based interventions when one partner in a relationship is experiencing individual psychopathology. Several investigations indicate that relationship distress and psychopathology are associated and reciprocally influence each other, such that the existence of relationship distress predicts the development of subsequent psychopathology and vice versa. Furthermore, findings indicate that for several disorders, individual psychotherapy ...

Abstract Background Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a serious mental health condition with substantial costs to individuals and society. Among military veterans, the lifetime prevalence of PTSD has been estimated to be as high as 20%. Numerous research studies have demonstrated that short-term cognitive-behavioral psychotherapies, such as Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), lead to substantial and sustained improvements in PTSD symptoms. Despite known benefits, only a minority of clinicians ...
