The oxygen isotope ratio of dissolved inorganic phosphate (δ(18)Op) represents a novel and potentially powerful stable isotope tracer for biogeochemical research. Analysis of δ(18)Op may offer new insights into the relative importance of different sources of phosphorus within natural ecosystems. Due to the isotope fractionations that occur alongside the metabolism of phosphorus, δ(18)Op could also be used to better understand the intracellular and extracellular reaction mechanisms that control phosphorus ...

EARLY FLOWERING3 (ELF3) is a circadian clock gene that contributes to photoperiod-dependent flowering in plants, with loss-of-function mutants in barley (Hordeum vulgare), legumes, and Arabidopsis thaliana flowering early under noninductive short-day (SD) photoperiods. The barley elf3 mutant displays increased expression of FLOWERING LOCUS T1 (FT1); however, it remains unclear whether this is the only factor responsible for the early flowering phenotype. We show that the early flowering and vegetative ...

To study the efficacy of lopinavir-ritonavir and hydroxychloroquine in critically ill patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Critically ill adults with COVID-19 were randomized to receive lopinavir-ritonavir, hydroxychloroquine, combination therapy of lopinavir-ritonavir and hydroxychloroquine or no antiviral therapy (control). The primary endpoint was an ordinal scale of organ support-free days. Analyses used a Bayesian cumulative logistic model and expressed treatment effects as an adjusted ...

Inhibitors of the Hsp90 molecular chaperone are showing considerable promise as potential molecular therapeutic agents for the treatment of cancer. Here we describe novel 2-aminothieno[2,3-d]pyrimidine ATP competitive Hsp90 inhibitors, which were designed by combining structural elements of distinct low affinity hits generated from fragment-based and in silico screening exercises in concert with structural information from X-ray protein crystallography. Examples from this series have high affinity ( ...

In polyandrous dunnocks, natural variation in alpha versus beta male share of matings was correlated with their paternity share (assessed by DNA fingerpringting) and with their share of work in chick feeding. A polyandrous male's share of mating access was a better predictor of his parental effort than was his total amount of mating access, suggesting that a male might monitor his paternity share by comparing his mating success with that of his rival. Males were removed temporarily at various stages ...

The variable mating system of the dunnock enabled us to measure how different amounts of male help influenced reproductive success. Male help became increasingly valuable as brood size increased, but the addition of one male's help increased success more than the addition of a second male's help. Removal experiments confirmed that differences in reproductive success were caused by differences in male help. Females laid a larger clutch when they expected two males' full-time help than when expected ...

Abstract Several trans ‐platinum(II) complexes, of the type R′{Pt(PBu 3 ) 2 }R″{Pt(PR 3 ) 2 }R′, where R′ and R″ are groups derived from a series of aromatic alkynes and diynes, have been prepared and characterized. Extensive spectroscopic data for these and other known related complexes are presented. A more precise structural study of trans ‐Pt(C≡CC 6 H 4 C≡CPh) 2 (PBu 3 ) 2 (cf. Z. Kristallogr . 1998; 213: 483) is reported. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

This paper describes a method for predicting air temperatures within the Urban Heat Island at discreet locations based on input data from one meteorological station for the time the prediction is required and historic measured air temperatures within the city. It uses London as a case-study to describe the method and its applications. The prediction model is based on Artificial Neural Network (ANN) modelling and it is termed the London Site Specific Air Temperature (LSSAT) predictor. The temporal ...

Leptospirosis is one of the most common zoonotic diseases in the world, resulting in high morbidity and mortality in humans and affecting global livestock production. Most infections are caused by either Leptospira borgpetersenii or Leptospira interrogans, bacteria that vary in their distribution in nature and rely on different modes of transmission. We report the complete genomic sequences of two strains of L. borgpetersenii serovar Hardjo that have distinct phenotypes and virulence. These two ...
