Vegetative storage proteins (VSPs) are known to serve as nitrogen reserves in many dicot plants but remain undiscovered in grasses, most widely grown group of crops globally. We identified and characterized a VSP in maize and demonstrated that its overexpression improved drought tolerance. Nitrogen supplementation selectively induced a mesophyll lipoxygenase (ZmLOX6), which was targeted to chloroplasts by a novel N-terminal transit peptide of 62 amino acids. When ectopically expressed under the control ...

Rivers and floodplains in urban areas are under threat from anthropogenic pressures, and are among the most degraded ecosystems in cities in many developing countries. Spatial analysis and social qualitative data are used to ascertain the extent and trend of loss of rivers and floodplains in Kumasi, a fast urbanising city in Ghana. Results of the study show a drastic decrease in the number and area of the rivers and floodplains in less than 3 decades. The spatial extent of the rivers and floodplains ...

Flood disasters remain a serious development challenge in cities in developing countries. In many cities, the frequency and intensity of flood disasters have increased spatially and temporally and cause more casualties and economic losses than any other natural catastrophe. This study used multiple qualitative research approaches to explore the nature and causes of, as well as proposes options for addressing future disasters in Kumasi, the fastest growing city in Ghana. The findings show that disastrous ...

Previous studies have shown that two low molecular-weight neurofilament (NF) proteins (NF-60 and NF-70) from the squid Loligo pealei are translated from mRNAs that are splice variants of a single squid NF gene. In this study, we report the isolation and characterization of cDNA clones encoding a high-molecular-weight squid NF protein (NF-220), the mRNA of which derives from the same squid NF gene. All three proteins are identical in their amino-terminal and lamin-like rod domains but differ in their ...

Large river systems, such as the River Ganges (Ganga), provide crucial water resources for the environment and society, yet often face significant challenges associated with cumulative impacts arising from upstream environmental and anthropogenic influences. Understanding the complex dynamics of such systems remains a major challenge, especially given accelerating environmental stressors including climate change and urbanization, and due to limitations in data and process understanding across scales. ...

MLKL is a pore forming pseudokinase involved in the final stage of necroptosis, a form of programmed cell death. Its phosphorylation by RIPK3 is necessary for triggering necroptosis but not for triggering apoptosis, which makes it a unique target for pharmacological inhibition to block necroptotic cell death. This mechanism has been described as playing a role in disease progression in neurodegenerative and inflammatory diseases. A type II kinase inhibitor (cpd 1) has been described that reportedly ...

However, in rural and impoverished urban areas, a number of infectious diseases remain neglected and cause massive suffering. It has been calculated that a group of 13 neglected infectious diseases affects over one billion people, ...

Natamycin is a polyene antibiotic that is commonly used as an antifungal agent because of its broad spectrum of activity and the lack of development of resistance. Other polyene antibiotics, like nystatin and filipin are known to interact with sterols, with some specificity for ergosterol thereby causing leakage of essential components and cell death. The mode of action of natamycin is unknown and is investigated in this study using different in vitro and in vivo approaches. Isothermal titration ...
