In South Texas, Trypanosoma cruzi (the etiologic agent of Chagas' disease) is found naturally occurring in animals and in the reduviid bugs which can transmit the organism when they bite human beings. Sera from 117 persons who had been bitten by these insects were tested for complement fixation with T. cruzi antigen; 3 (2.5%) were positive. The positive reactors had no clinical evidence of the disease and their blood cultures were negative for T. cruzi. Typical inoculation lesions were observed on ...

An x-ray unit designed for conventional nonmagnification and magnification mammography has been evaluated in terms of image quality and corresponding radiation exposure levels. The technical advantages of the radiographic magnification technique can result in improved image quality and reduction of the recording-system noise. The microfocal spot allows 1.5 x magnification mammograms with minimal geometric unsharpness. However, the magnification technique requires an increased radiation dose to the ...

The first synthesis of the tumor-associated α-aminooxy T-antigen 1, a relevant recognition motif for the direct construction of multitopic carbohydrate architecture of biological interest is described. The usefulness of this building block is emphasized with the efficient preparation through oxime ligation of a neoglycopeptide cluster, which is readily suitable for evaluating the role of multivalency in antigen presentation to the immune system from an anticancer vaccine perspective.

This chapter discusses the chemical synthesis of glycopeptides. Glycoproteins are composed of a polypeptide backbone which is glycosylated with one or more carbohydrate chains. The availability of glycopeptides from natural sources is limited because of the low concentration and the microheterogeneity of biological glycoconjugates. The advances in carbohydrate and peptide chemistry in the last decade have created generally applicable methodologies for the synthesis of glycopeptides as model compounds ...

Abstract Benzyl and allyl glycosides are prepared directly from 1,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl-2-deoxy-2-phthalimido-α,β-d-glucppyranose and 1,2,3,4-tetra-O-acetyl-β-l-rhamnopyranose using stannic chloride as catalyst with solutions of the respective alcohols in methylene chloride.

The goal of this roadmap paper is to summarize the state-of-the-art and to identify critical challenges for the systematic software engineering of self-adaptive systems. The paper is partitioned into four parts, one for each of the identified essential views of self-adaptation: modelling dimensions, requirements, engineering, and assurances. For each view, we present the state-of-the-art and the challenges that our community must address. This roadmap paper is a result of the Dagstuhl Seminar 08031 ...

This paper discusses preliminary work on modeling and validation dynamic adaptation. The proposed approach is on the use of aspect-oriented modeling (AOM) and models at runtime. Our approach covers design and runtime phases. At design-time, a base model and different variant architecture models are designed and the adaptation model is built. Crucially, the adaptation model includes invariant properties and constraints that allow the validation of the adaptation rules before execution. During runtime, ...

Runtime adaptation mechanisms that leverage software models extend the applicability of model-driven engineering techniques to the runtime environment. Contemporary mission-critical software systems are often expected to safely adapt to changes in their execution environment. Given the critical roles these systems play, it is often inconvenient to take them offline to adapt their functionality. Consequently, these systems are required, when feasible, to adapt their behavior at runtime with little ...

Cervical cancer causes great morbidity and mortality worldwide and in the United States. Infection with oncogenic human papillomavirus (HPV), the etiological agent of almost all cervical cancer cases, is common among sexually active women in the United States. Over the past 5 decades, the implementation of Papanicolaou screening programs in the United States has led to a significant decrease in cervical cancer cases. However, notable disparities in the incidence and mortality of cervical cancer and ...

A solid-phase microextraction (SMPE) method coupled to a gas chromatography–mass spectrometry analysis was optimized to analyze the pentafluorobenzyl bromide (PFBBr) derivatives of the volatile thiols 4-methyl-4-mercapto-2-pentanone (4MMP), 3-mercaptohexyl acetate (3MHA) and 3-mercaptohexanol (3MH) in wine. This method used deuterated analogue compounds as internal standards. It allowed us to significantly reduce the matrix effect, resulted in good repeatability for all the compounds (RDS < 9.5% for 4MMP; < ...

Dynamically adaptive systems (DASs) are intended to monitor the execution environment and then dynamically adapt their behavior in response to changing environmental conditions. The uncertainty of the execution environment is a major motivation for dynamic adaptation; it is impossible to know at development time all of the possible combinations of environmental conditions that will be encountered. To date, the work performed in requirements engineering for a DAS includes requirements monitoring and ...

Modelling architectural information is particularly important because of the acknowledged crucial role of software architecture in raising the level of abstraction during development. In the MDE area, the level of abstraction of models has frequently been related to low-level design concepts. However, model-driven techniques can be further exploited to model software artefacts that take into account the architecture of the system and its changes according to variations of the environment. In this ...

The volatile composition of a red wine aged for 2 months with three different Spanish oak chips (Quercus pyrenaica and Quercus petraea) from different regions of Castilla y León was compared with that of wines aged with American and French chips. In general, the extraction kinetics showed that the maximum concentration of the volatile compounds extracted from wood can be reached in only 1 month. In the final wines, the levels of furanic aldehydes and eugenol were higher in the wines macerated with ...

Intensity‐modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) is a complex procedure that involves the delivery of complex intensity patterns from various gantry angles. Due to the complexity of the treatment plans, the standard care is to perform measurement‐based, patient‐specific quality assurance (QA). IMRT QA is traditionally done with film for relative dose in a plane and with an ion chamber for absolute dose. This is a laborious and time‐consuming process. In this work, we characterized, commissioned, and evaluated ...
