Objective The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) plays a key role in obesity. In vitro studies revealed that the tryptophan metabolite kynurenine (Kyn) activates AHR signaling in cultured hepatocytes. The objective of this study was to determine whether Kyn activated the AHR in mice to induce obesity. Methods Mice were fed a low‐fat diet and the same diet supplemented with Kyn. Body mass, liver status, and the expression of identified relevant genes were determined. Results Kyn caused mice to gain significant ...

Abstract This work concerns the study of colors and dyes identified on archaeological textiles from the Atacama Desert. The different garments and ornaments come from the excavation of two important pre-Columbian cemeteries of the Tarapacá region: Tarapacá-40 attributed to the Formative period (1100 BC–660 AD) and Pica-8 to the Late Intermediate period (900–1450 AD). For the first time, a multi-analytical approach with non-invasive techniques using FORS and SERS was applied on samples of less than ...

Yellow fever (YF) is the prototypical hemorrhagic fever and results from infection with yellow fever virus (YFV), which is endemic to regions of Africa and South America. Despite the availability of an effective vaccine, YFV continues to cause disease throughout regions where it is endemic, including intermittent large outbreaks among undervaccinated populations.

Comorbid diabetes and substance use diagnoses (SUD) represent a hazardous combination, both in terms of healthcare cost and morbidity. To date, there is limited information about the association of SUD and related mental disorders with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).We examined the associations between T2DM and multiple psychiatric diagnosis categories, with a focus on SUD and related psychiatric comorbidities among adults with T2DM. We analyzed electronic health record (EHR) data on 170,853 unique ...

We report on measurements of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and celestial polarization at 146 GHz made with the Atacama Cosmology Telescope Polarimeter (ACTPol) in its first three months of observing. Four regions of sky covering a total of 270 square degrees were mapped with an angular resolution of $1.3'$. The map noise levels in the four regions are between 11 and 17 $\mu$K-arcmin. We present TT, TE, EE, TB, EB, and BB power spectra from three of these regions. The observed E-mode polarization ...

Adhesive-free fiberboards can be self-bonded through high temperature thermo-compression processes. To achieve it, treatments such as steam explosion/injection, as well as chemical and enzymatic oxidation have been implemented. However, the role of extractive components in the structure and cohesiveness of fiberboards has not been fully understood. In this work fibers of leaf plantain were treated with organic solvents and with hot water to remove the extractives, and were then employed to produce ...

The specific resistance, r ss , in series with the surface sarcolemma, was estimated as 6 Ω cm 2 by measuring the initial value of the membrane potential transient in response to current pulses under current‐clamp conditions. To reduce the error in the potential across the sarcolemma ...

In our increasingly obesogenic environment, in which high-calorie convenience foods are readily available, food choices can drastically affect weight and overall health. Learned food preferences, which are developed through repeated pairings with positively and negatively valenced stimuli, can contribute to obesity susceptibility if positive attitudes toward high-calorie foods are developed. Thus, the modification of automatic associations with food may be a viable strategy to promote healthier ...

A new portable gas phase nitric oxide (NO) generator is described for potential applications in inhaled NO (INO) therapy and during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) surgery. In this system, NO is produced at the surface of a large-area mesh working electrode by electrochemical reduction of nitrite ions in the presence of a soluble copper(II)-ligand electron transfer mediator complex. The NO generated is then transported into gas phase by either direct purging with nitrogen/air or via circulating the electrolyte/ ...

A new variant of the Pickup and Delivery Routing problem is presented. Given a set of customers, facilities, a depot, and a homogeneous fleet of drones, the Pickup to Delivery Drone Routing Problem (PDDRP) aims to find a drone scheduling such that a drone serves the customer’s order from a set of available facilities. Each drone starts in the depot, flies to pickup the customer’s order in a facility, and continues its flight to deliver the parcel to a customer. Then, the drone begins another service, ...
