Beowulf-class systems along with other forms of PC clustered systems have matured to the point that they are becoming the strategy of choice for some areas of high performance applications. A Beowulf system is a cluster of mass market COTS personal computers interconnected by means of widely available local area network (LAN) technology. Beowulf software is based on open source code Unix-like operating systems that, in a majority of cases, is Linux. The API for Beowulf is based on message passing ...

This paper presents some performance results obtained from a new Beowulf cluster, the Helix, built at Massey University, Auckland funded by the Allan Wilson Center for Evolutionary Ecology. Issues concerning network latency and the effect of the switching fabric and network topology on performance are discussed. In order to assess how the system performed using the message passing interface (MPI), two test suites (mpptest and jumpshot) were used to provide a comprehensive network performance analysis. ...

We present a neural networks simulator that we have called NeuSim, designed to work in Beowulf clusters. We have been using this simulator during the last years over several architectures and soon we want to distribute it under GPL license. In this work we offer a detailed description of the simulator, as well as the performance results obtained with a Beowulf cluster of 24 nodes.

We have constructed a Beowulf cluster of networked PCs that is dedicated to solving chemistry problems using standard software packages such as Gaussian and GAMESS. We describe the economic and performance trade-offs in the design of the cluster, and present some some selected benchmark results for a parallel version of GAMESS. We believe that the Beowulf we have constructed offers the best price/performance ratio for our chemistry applications, and that commodity clusters can now provide dedicated ...

The aim of the research reported in this paper was to assess the scalability of a binary correlation Matrix Memory (CMM) based on the PRESENCE (PaRallEl StructurEd Neural Computing Engine) architecture. A single PRESENCE card has a finite memory capacity, and this paper describes how multiple PCI-based PRESENCE cards are utilised in order to scale up memory capacity and performance. A Beowulf class cluster, called Cortex-1, provides the scalable I/O capacity needed for multiple cards, and techniques ...

Among the many existing multiresolution algorithms, the scale-space approach offers the benefits of strong mathematical and biological foundation and excellent results, but the serious drawback of a heavy computational load. Parallel implementation of this category of algorithms has never been attempted. This article presents a first experiment, using the multiresolution watershed segmentation as algorithm, and an 8-node Beowulf network as hardware platform. First, the classical approach is followed ...
