The ground-state properties of several systems showing the Toulouse frustration effect are investigated analytically. First, the energy and entropy of the random-bond Ising chain in a uniform field are obtained for all concentrations of antiferromagnetic bonds using the transfer-matrix method. The susceptibility has discontinuities for an infinite number of critical values of the field, where the entropy shows spikes in addition to discontinuities. These effects are related to the physics of frustration. ...

The authors study the thermodynamic properties of the random-anisotropy-axis model of amorphous magnets when the interaction range becomes infinite. This model is exactly soluble and has a ferromagnetic second-order phase transition at the same temperature as the pure n component spin system. There is no spin glass phase and mean-field theory is rigorously justified in this case. Explicit expressions are given for the magnetisation, specific heat and susceptibility near the transition and at low ...

In this Letter, a simple model of disordered systems---the random-energy model---is introduced and solved. This model is the limit of a family of disordered models, when the correlations between the energy levels become negligible. The properties are qualitatively the same as those of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model. Moreover, this random-energy model looks like a simple approximation to any spin-glass model.

Endomorphisms of the real axis with one extremum have some universal metric properties which depend only on their analytic dependence near the extremum (bifurcation velocity, reduction parameter). It is shown how this problem is similar to the renormalisation problem, and how the bifurcation velocity may be derived from a fixed-point theory.

To describe a polymer in a random medium, the author considers a self-avoiding walk (SAW) on a lattice whose bonds are randomly favourable (with probability 1-p) or unfavourable (with probability p). The size of a SAW of N steps is calculated when the lattice is a strip by performing products of random matrices. When the weight of unfavourable bonds tends to 0, there exist critical concentrations pc where the size of the SAW undergoes first-order transitions. The origin of these transitions is explained ...

Introduces a transfer-matrix formulation to compute the conductance of random resistor networks. The authors apply this method to strips of width up to 40, and use finite size scaling arguments to obtain an estimate for the conductivity critical exponent in two dimensions, t=1.28+or-0.03.

A simple model of classical diffusion on a random chain is studied. The velocities to the right and to the left are calculated. When one changes continuously the probability distribution $\ensuremath{\rho}$ of the hopping rates, a whole region is found where these two velocities vanish. In this region, the distance $R$ covered by a particle during the time $t$ behaves like $R\ensuremath{\sim}{t}^{x}$, where $x$ depends continuously on $\ensuremath{\rho}$. The exponent $x$ is calculated for a simple example.

The basic equations of the phenomenological renormalization method are recalled. A simple derivation using finite-size scaling is presented. The convergence of the method is studied analytically for the Ising model. Using this method we give predictions for the 2d bond percolation. Finally we discuss how the method can be applied to random systems.

Bernard Derrida, H. J. Hilhorst,
In random magnets the probability distribution of the correlation function at large distance is not concentrated around its average. To illustrate this idea two examples are studied: a random Ising chain and a random cubic chain. The extension of the findings to higher dimension and the connection to Harris' criterion (1974) are discussed heuristically. It is concluded that in Monte Carlo simulations due to the combined effects of randomness and finite size effects one can only measure the most probable ...

Critical exponents of the two-dimensional, q-state Potts model are calculated by means of finite size scaling and transfer matrix techniques for continuous q. Results for the temperature exponent agree accurately with the conjecture of den Nijs (1979). The magnetic exponent is found to behave in accordance with the conjecture of Nienhuis et al. (1980).
