Abstract Prevention of browning of apple juice by catechol oxidase was brought about through enzymic cleavage of the aromatic ring of juice‐darkening constituents. Protocatechuate‐3,4‐dioxygenase in the presence of ascorbate oxidatively attacked the catechol compounds in juice, nullifying their darkening capacity.

These four cases were found in a post-mortem survey of 20 out of the 27 infants who died. Another nine of these infants had detectable amounts of HCP in the brain but no myelinopathy. Abstract Treatment of the father with the anticancer alkylating agent cyclophosphamide has negative effects on embryonic development in the rat. Four‐week treatment of male rats with a low dose of cyclophosphamide cause a dramatic, dose‐dependent increase in postimplantation death of the progeny. Several recent studies have indicated that the paternal genome is required for the development of the extraembryonic tissues. Thus, the purpose of this study was to determine which tissues of the implanting ...

Mice with a targeted disruption of the prolactin (PRL) receptor gene were used to study the physiological role of PRL in the control of the male reproductive function. Fertility parameters as well as body and reproductive organ weights (epididymis and testes) were unaffected in PRL receptor knockout mice. Testicular histology and sperm reserves were also normal. Compared with wild-type animals, knockout mice had no significant difference in basal plasma LH, FSH, and testosterone levels, and the weight ...

Exposure of the male germ cell to cyclophosphamide during spermatogenesis and sperm maturation can interfere with development of the embryo. When male rats were treated with a chronic low dose of cyclophosphamide for 4 wk there was a dramatic increase in early postimplantation loss in their progeny, characterized by implantation sites selectively lacking in embryonic tissues. The present study was designed to determine the earliest appearance of a paternal effect of cyclophosphamide treatment and ...

Massively parallel DNA sequencing technologies provide an unprecedented ability to screen entire genomes for genetic changes associated with tumour progression. Here we describe the genomic analyses of four DNA samples from an African-American patient with basal-like breast cancer: peripheral blood, the primary tumour, a brain metastasis and a xenograft derived from the primary tumour. The metastasis contained two de novo mutations and a large deletion not present in the primary tumour, and was ...

The anticancer agent, 5-aza-2′-deoxycytidine (5-azaCdR, decitabine), causes DNA hypomethylation and a robust, dose-dependent disruption of spermatogenesis. Previously, we have shown that altered testicular histology and reduced sperm production in 5-azaCdR-treated animals is associated with decreased global sperm DNA methylation and an increase in infertility and/or a decreased ability to support preimplantation embryonic development. The goal of this study was to determine potential contributors ...

The rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta) is an abundant primate species that diverged from the ancestors of Homo sapiens about 25 million years ago. Because they are genetically and physiologically similar to humans, rhesus monkeys are the most widely used nonhuman primate in basic and applied biomedical research. We determined the genome sequence of an Indian-origin Macaca mulatta female and compared the data with chimpanzees and humans to reveal the structure of ancestral primate genomes and to identify ...

Cadaveric allografts and a large variety of other biologic dressings have been reported as being useful for the postoperative management of Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) wounds. Although the use of porcine xenografts for the immediate postoperative management of these wounds is known, their use has not been detailed in the dermatology literature. A case series of 15 consecutive Mohs micrographic surgery patients (mean age = 74.9 years, range = 49 to 89 years) with wounds initially managed with porcine ...

Growth and survival of hematopoietic cells is regulated by growth factors and cytokines, such as interleukin 3 (IL-3). When cytokine is removed, cells dependent on IL-3 kill themselves by a mechanism that is inhibited by overexpression of Bcl-2 and is likely to be mediated by proapoptotic Bcl-2 family members. Bad and Bim are 2 such BH3-only Bcl-2 family members that have been implicated as key initiators in apoptosis following growth factor withdrawal, particularly in IL-3-dependent cells. To test ...
