The ultraviolet (UV) absorption spectra of several gasoline samples are measured using a compact static Fourier-transform (FT) spectrometer. The FT-UV spectrometer is constructed from crystalline quartz Wollaston prisms and polarizers fabricated from beta barium borate to form an interferogram in the spatial domain. The interferogram is recorded with a UV-sensitive detector array and Fourier transformed to yield spectra. Investigation using principal component analysis enables the identification of ...

When the effects of Amblyomma maculatum Koch on Hereford and Brahman breeds of cattle were measured, significant differences in weight gains between infested and uninfested Herefords were noted but not between infested and uninfested Brahmans. Uninfested Herefords gained almost 27 kg more than the tick-infested Herefords during the 8-week study. Mean values of blood parameters measured for each breed-treatment combination group on the same day were most often not significantly different.

Mitochondrial quality control is mediated by the PTEN-induced kinase 1 (PINK1), a cytoprotective protein that is dysregulated in inflammatory lung injury and neurodegenerative diseases. Here, we show that a ubiquitin E3 ligase receptor component, FBXO7, targets PINK1 for its cellular disposal. FBXO7, by mediating PINK1 ubiquitylation and degradation, was sufficient to induce mitochondrial injury and inflammation in experimental pneumonia. A computational simulation–based screen led to the identification ...
