Highly stressed aerospace structures, such as the wing attachment points and load carry-through bulkheads of fighter aircraft, often grow fatigue cracks from micro-scale discontinuities. These cracks spend much of their lives close to these discontinuities in the small crack regime. The accurate prediction of fatigue crack growth in this small crack regime leads to setting realistic inspection thresholds for the aircraft and assisting in accurate risk-based assessment of the lives of such cracks. ...

The application of a focused ion beam to voltage-contrast probing and repair of integrated circuits is demonstrated. Holes have been opened through passivation layers and waveforms have been acquired using voltage contrast. Voltage-coding techniques have been used to trace signals and confirm repairs. A complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) programmable logic array (PLA) with a design error has been successfully repaired using ion beam milling to disconnect metal lines buried under thick ...

A. R. Kirkpatrick, Bill Ward, N. P. Economou,

Diamond thin-films on nondiamond substrates characteristically exhibit a highly disordered polycrystalline microstructure and poor surface morphology. A major factor involved in this unsatisfactory growth behavior is a very-low density-of-nucleation on most surfaces. It is feasible that ion milling by a focused ion-beam can be utilized to introduce precise arrays of effective nucleation sites for diamond-film deposition. Possibilities for improved diamond-film microstructure and morphology are expected ...

The newly developed helium ion microscope is an instrument well suited to high resolution surface specific imaging with several unique contrast mechanisms. In addition to its imaging capabilities, the focused helium ion beam (subnanometer in size) has recently been used for elemental analysis. The scattering probability, angular distribution, and recoil energy combine to provide valuable information about the specimen being analyzed.

A new microscope has been developed that uses a beam of helium ions which is focused and scanned across the sample. In principle, and in its applications, it is similar to a traditional scanning electron microscope (SEM). However, the source technology, the sample interaction, and the contrast mechanisms are distinctly different. The helium ion source offers high brightness (4×109 A/cm2sr) and a small energy spread (ΔE/E∼3×10−5), and hence allows the beam to be focused to small probe sizes (as small ...

Abstract In order to get high resolution images from any scanning beam microscope one must be able to produce a sufficiently small probe, have a small interaction volume in the substrate and have an abundance of information-rich particles to collect to create the image. A typical scanning electron microscope is able to meet all of these requirements to some degree. However, a helium ion microscope based on a Gas Field Ion Source (GFIS) has significant advantages over the SEM in all three categories.

ALIS Corporation has developed a new helium ion microscope which has many advantages over both traditional scanning electron microscopes (SEMs) and focused ion beams (FIBs). This new technology is expected to produce an ultimate focused spot size of 0.25nm. This high resolution is attributed to the high source brightness (B>4×109A∕cm2sr), low energy spread (ΔE∕E∼2×10−5), and small diffraction effects (λ∼80fm). The interaction of helium ions with matter offers several valuable contrast mechanisms ...

The use of focused-ion-beam (FIB) technology for the repair of masks and for the modification of integrated circuits is discussed. The processes required for these two applications are similar and can thus be implemented by similar systems. Focused-ion-beam sputtering and focused-ion-beam induced deposition results are presented which show the usefulness of FIB techniques for repair applications.
