The future of coral reef ecosystems is under threat because vital reef-accreting species such as coralline algae are highly susceptible to ocean acidification. Although ocean acidification is known to reduce coralline algal growth rates, its direct effects on the development of coralline algal reproductive structures (conceptacles) is largely unknown. Furthermore, the long-term, multi-generational response of coralline algae to ocean acidification is extremely understudied. Here, we investigate how ...

Increasing ocean temperatures have been demonstrated to have a range of negative impacts on coral reef fishes. However, despite a wealth of studies of juvenile/adult reef fish, studies of how early developmental stages respond to ocean warming are limited. As overall population persistence is influenced by the development of early life stages, detailed studies of larval responses to ocean warming are essential. Here, in an aquaria-based study we investigate how temperatures associated with future ...

Billy Moore, Jeffrey Jolly, Michael Izumiyama, Erina Kawai, Timothy Ravasi, Taewoo Ryu,
Anthropogenically driven climate change is predicted to increase average sea surface temperatures, as well as the frequency and intensity of marine heatwaves in the future. This increasing temperature is predicted to have a range of negative physiological impacts on multiple life-stages of coral reef fish. Nevertheless, studies of early-life stages remain limited, and tissue-specific transcriptomic studies of post-larval coral reef fish are yet to be conducted. Here, in an aquaria-based study we ...

Distributions of chlorophylls a, b, c, and pheopigments a, b, c in the western part of the Indian Ocean (20 July to 15 August 1979) have been assessed using spectrofluorometry. Highest values of Chl a occur in the upwelling area south of Cape Gardafuy (3.7 mg m−3). They are associated with algae (essentially diatoms) containing Chl c as accessory chlorophyll. Oligotrophic conditions and low Chl a content (0.06 to 0.6 mg m−3) characterize the rest of the sampling area. In these oligotrophic waters, vertical ...

Currently, the Philippine yellowfin tuna is believed to be part of a single stock of the greater WCPO though some reports suggest otherwise. This study therefore aims to establish the genetic stock structure ...
