The acronym POEMS was coined by Bardwick et al1 in 1980 and describes the main features of this pathologic entity including polyneuropathy, organomegaly, endocrinopathy and elevated levels of a monoclonal protein in the serum and urine.2 Skin changes are generally nonspecific and include hyperpigmentation, skin thickening, and scleroderma-like changes, among others.3-10 We describe a patient with POEMS syndrome whose cutaneous manifestations markedly improved after phototherapy with UVA1 (340-400 ...

The kinetics of the palladium-catalyzed biphasic telomerization of butadiene and ammonia (shown here) was studied. From the results, a model for the reaction mechanism explaining the regioselectivities obtained was deduced. Several water-soluble phosphanes were used as ligands in this reaction, confirming the model. In one case the target product 1 was obtained with 94 % regioselectivity.

The mental health of elite athletes has received increasing attention in recent years, but no study has evaluated the career-time prevalence of depression, and very few have analysed risk factors of mental health problems during or after the career.157 (response rate 64.1%) female players who played in the German First League answered an anonymous online survey on details of their football career, stressful and helpful conditions, depression and need of psychotherapeutic support during and after ...

The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of health problems and associated risk factors in former elite female football players. A cross-sectional research design was employed, using an online questionnaire on personal characteristics and health complaints during/after the career. One hundred fifty-two (response rate: 62.0%) former first German league players answered the survey. Around 70% described their current health as good or very good. Over half (57.9%) reported knee problems during ...

The industrially interesting primary octadienylamines 1 and 2 can be synthesized selectively for the first time from 1,3-butadiene and ammonia. The use of an aqueous catalyst phase together with an organic solvent as a second phase are the key to the success of this process. Consecutive reactions of the primary amines 1 and 2, which are more nucleophilic than ammonia, can thus be avoided.

The serotonin system has recently been demonstrated to have an important role in Parkinson's disease, in particular in response to l-DOPA treatment. It has been shown that central serotonin neurons convert peripherally administered l-DOPA to dopamine. Striatal dopamine release by these serotonin neurons is believed to be a main player in the induction of the troublesome l-DOPA-induced dyskinesias, which develops in patients within 5–10 years after the use of the drug. Electrophysiological characterization ...

The heavy metals lead (Pb) and mercury (Hg) are ubiquitous environmental pollutants with high neurotoxic potential. We aimed to compare perinatal Pb and Hg concentrations and to explore the potential association between Pb and Hg exposure and newborn anthropometry. Pregnant women were recruited in 2005 at the General Hospital Vienna for participation in this longitudinal study. Pb and Hg concentrations were measured in maternal blood and hair, placenta, cord blood, meconium, and breast milk of 53 ...

In human peripheral blood the classical CD14++DR+ monocytes and the pro-inflammatory CD14+CD16+DR++ monocytes can be distinguished. In erysipelas we found strongly increased numbers of CD14+CD16+ monocytes on the day of diagnosis (day 1) in 11 patients with an average of 150.5±76.0 cells/μl, while 1 patient had low levels (35 cells/μl, control donors 48.8±19.8 cells/μl). The classical monocytes were only moderately elevated in the erysipelas patients (factor 1.7 as compared to controls). Patients exhibited ...

Recent studies have demonstrated that 6-month-olds perceive manual actions as object-directed (Woodward, 1999) — and that 8-, but not 6-month-olds, apply this interpretation even to unfamiliar actions if these produce salient object-directed effects (Kiràly, Jovanovic, Prinz, Aschersleben, & Gergely, 2003). The present study had two objectives. First, we tested the alternative interpretation that action effects result in a general increase of attention by testing infants with an analogous paradigm, including ...

In this study, the authors applied methods and theories from research of stimulus-response compatibility (SRC) to action imitation. In 6 experiments, they adopted the logic of the Simon paradigm (B. Hommel & W. Prinz, 1996) to explore interference between task-relevant symbolic stimulus features (color) and task-irrelevant iconic stimulus features (2 hand gestures and 2 postures). The same 2 hand gestures served as responses. Pronounced correspondence effects for both gestures and postures showed up throughout. ...

Voluntary action is goal-directed and therefore depends on the ability to learn associations between movements and their perceivable consequences. The neural substrate of this ability was investigated with H2(15O) positron emission tomography (PET). Healthy adults first learned that self-initiated keypresses were consistently followed by certain tones (i.e., action effects). During PET imaging, participants listened to varied ratios of action-effect tones and neutral tones without performing any movement. ...

Keratinocytes (KCs) form the outer epithelial barrier of the body, protecting against invading pathogens. Mice lacking the IL-17RA or both IL-17A and IL-17F develop spontaneous Staphylococcus aureus skin infections. We found a marked expansion of T17 cells, comprised of RORγt-expressing γδ T cells and T helper 17 cells in the skin-draining lymph nodes of these mice. Contradictory to previous suggestions, this expansion was not a result of a direct negative feedback loop because we found no expansion ...

High attrition rates of novel anti-cancer drugs highlight the need for improved models to predict toxicity. Although polo-like kinase 1 (Plk1) inhibitors are attractive candidates for drug development, the role of Plk1 in primary cells remains widely unexplored. Therefore, we evaluated the utility of an RNA interference-based model to assess responses to an inducible knockdown (iKD) of Plk1 in adult mice. Here we show that Plk1 silencing can be achieved in several organs, although adverse events are ...

Abstract Here, as part of the Pan-Cancer Analysis of Whole Genomes (PCAWG) Consortium, for which whole-genome and—for a subset—whole-transcriptome sequencing data from 2,658 cancers across 38 tumor types was aggregated, we systematically investigated potential viral pathogens using a consensus approach that integrated three independent pipelines. Viruses were detected in 382 genome and 68 transcriptome datasets. We found a high prevalence of known tumor-associated viruses such as Epstein–Barr virus ( ...
