The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that sidestream tobacco smoke extracts would inhibit the culture of endothelial cells and enhance platelet aggregation under diabetic vascular conditions. Sidestream tobacco smoke and advanced glycation end products are known cardiovascular risk factors and we aimed to determine the combined interaction between these two risk factors to promote cardiovascular diseases associated with diabetes. Human umbilical vein endothelial cells were cultured ...

Primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) is the most prevalent form of glaucoma, accounting for approximately 90% of all cases. The aqueous humor (AH), a biological fluid in the anterior and posterior chambers of the eye, is involved in a multitude of functions including the maintenance of IOP and ocular homeostasis. This fluid is very close to the pathologic site and is also known to have a significant role in glaucoma pathogenesis. The purpose of this study was to identify proteomic alterations in AH ...

The concentration of methane has been measured in tropospheric air samples collected in remote locations between 55°N and 53°S during six collection periods between November 1977 and November 1980. The observed concentrations of CH 4 have increased in each of six latitude locations by an average of 0.052±0.005 ppmv between January 1978 and January 1980. This (1.4±0.2)×10 14 gram increase in the total atmospheric burden of CH 4 corresponds to 35±12% of the yearly flux of (4.0±1.3)×10 14 grams needed ...

Neurotransmitters such as dopamine play an important role in reproductive behaviors and signaling. Neuroendocrine-active chemicals in the environment have potential to interfere with and/or alter these processes. A companion study with the dopamine 2 receptor antagonist, haloperidol, found no evidence of a direct effect of the chemical on fish reproduction. This study considered haloperidol's potential effects on behavior and ovarian gene expression. Male fathead minnows exposed to 50 microg haloperidol/ ...

Neurotransmitters such as dopamine play an important role in regulating fish reproduction. However, the potential for neuroendocrine active chemicals to disrupt fish reproduction has not been well studied, despite emerging evidence of their discharge into aquatic environments. This study is the first to apply the fathead minnow 21 d reproduction assay developed for the US Endocrine Disruptor Screening Program to evaluate the reproductive toxicity of a model neuroendocrine active chemical, the dopamine ...
