Bob Burn,

A study is made of the implications of the recent polarization measurements for the structures of discrete radio sources and the source–observer media. Simple models of wavelength-dependent depolarizing mechanisms are investigated and it is found that most are incompatible with the observations of Gardner & Whiteoak. The models of internal Faraday dispersion predict a lower polarization at 30 cm than is observed. It is suggested that the depolarization of the Crab nebula is produced by Faraday rotation ...

Ian H. Sloan, Bob Burn, N. Datyner,

A new degenerate-kernel approach is developed for the numerical solution of Fredholm integral equations of the second kind, y = f + λKy. An essential feature is that the rank-N approximate kernel is constructed to be exact when it operates in a certain N-dimensional subspace, the subspace being chosen for its suitability for approximating y. The simplest version of the method is equivalent to a single iteration of the method of moments, or Galerkin method, and is very similar to the method of moments ...

Ian H. Sloan, Ezzat S. Noussair, Bob Burn,

A class of projection methods, differing from the classical projection methods, is studied for the equation y = f + Ky, where K is a compact linear operator in a Banach space E, and f ϵ E, In these methods K is approximated by a finite-rank operator Kn, which is constructed with the aid of certain projection operators, and which satisfies Knz = Kz for all z belonging to a chosen subspace Un ⊂ E. Under certain conditions, it is shown that the convergence of the approximate solution is faster than that of ...

Ian H. Sloan, Bob Burn,

A new, fully discrete method is proposed for the logarithmic-kernel integral equation of the first kind on a smooth closed curve. The method uses two levels of numerical quadrature: a trapezoidal rule for the integral containing the logarithmic singularity; and a special quadrature rule for the outer integral, which compensates, in part, for the errors in the first integral.A convergence and stability analysis is given, and the predicted orders of convergence verified in a numerical example.A numerical ...

Thermal, mechanical, and optical properties of Cleartran® multispectral zinc sulfide were measured. Heat capacity, thermal conductivity, and thermal expansion were measured over the temperature range 213 to 643 K. Young's modulus and shear modulus were measured at 289 to 473 K. The characteristic four-point flexure strength for a 1-cm2 area was 75.4±0.5 MPa at 289 K and 89.5±0.4 MPa at 473 K, with Weibull moduli of 11.0±0.7 and 19.3±1.5, respectively.
