A modified version of the Direct LSC method to correct for quenching effect was investigated for the determination of bio-originated fuel content in fuel samples produced from multiple biological starting materials. The modified method was found to be accurate in determining the percent bio-originated fuel to within 5% of the actual value for samples with quenching effects ≤43%. Analysis of highly quenched samples was possible when diluted with the exception of one sample with a 100% quenching effect.

Previous research has shown that fear of crime among the elderly is very common, and being a victim is not uncommon. There have been no descriptions of the impact of crimes on the mental health of the victims. In this study, 350 psychiatric patients were screened for post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD). One hundred of the patients had been victims, and five of the victims (5%) had PTSD. Their clinical characteristics are described. In this series, most crimes were not complicated by PTSD.

This article is based on new calculations of the level of turnout in county borough elections between the wars. Various factors that may have affected the level of voter abstention are considered in the light of the new evidence, and reasons for the significantly lower turnout found in municipal than parliamentary elections are evaluated. The relationship between turnout and electoral support for the Labour Party is also examined. It is suggested that the new evidence tends to contradict the commonplace ...

Operators within the UK nuclear industry are required to employ 'best practicable means' (BPM) to control and minimise radioactive discharges. The requirement for the use of BPM is in order to ensure that doses from discharges are as low as reasonably practicable (ALARP). This facet is increasingly becoming the principal feature of discharge authorisations issued by the Environment Agencies under the Radioactive Substances Act, 1993 (RSA 93), which are enforceable by law. It is important to state at ...

The concepts of "anti-aging" and "anti-aging medicine" in particular are hotly debated now, both in the mass media and among some researchers. This paper represents an open discussion of anti-aging terms and related ideas by nine leading experts in the field of aging studies, and it describes in detail the arguments presented by both supporters and opponents of these concepts. Candid exchange of opinions makes it clear that more efforts are required before a consensus on these issues can be reached. ...
