Electroencephalogram patterns observed during sedation with dexmedetomidine appear similar to those observed during general anesthesia with propofol. This is evident with the occurrence of slow (0.1 to 1 Hz), delta (1 to 4 Hz), propofol-induced alpha (8 to 12 Hz), and dexmedetomidine-induced spindle (12 to 16 Hz) oscillations. However, these drugs have different molecular mechanisms and behavioral properties and are likely accompanied by distinguishing neural circuit dynamics.

In this work, nanometric hydroxyapatite was added with mineral traces naturally present in mammalian bones. It was synthesized by wet chemical precipitation using Ca(OH)2 obtained from eggshells as a precursor. Subsequent calcination was performed at a low temperature of 250 °C to remove reaction by-products but avoiding the crystal size transition to micrometric sizes. Synthetic hydroxyapatite crystals exhibited irregular-spherical morphologies with a Feret's diameter ranging from 10 to 90 nm. Most ...

Insulin autoimmune syndrome (IAS) or Hirata's disease is a rare disorder characterized by hypoglycemia secondary to insulin autoantibodies (IAb). Over 200 patients have been described from Japan with significantly less numbers being reported from outside the Orient. IAS is more common in patients older than 40 yr of age with reports in the pediatric age group being notably rarer. Exposure to sulfhydryl group containing medications is implicated in the pathogenesis of this syndrome. In this report, ...

ABSTRACT Clostridioides difficile causes diarrheal diseases mediated in part by the secreted toxins TcdA and TcdB. C. difficile produces flagella that also contribute to motility and bacterial adherence to intestinal cells during infection. Flagellum expression and toxin gene expression are linked via the flagellar alternative sigma factor, SigD. Recently, we identified a flagellar switch upstream of the early flagellar biosynthesis operon that mediates phase variation of both flagellum and toxin ...

The central abundance hypothesis predicts that local adaptation is a function of the distance to the centre of a species' geographic range. To test this hypothesis, we gathered genomic diversity data from 49 populations, 646 individuals and 33,464 SNPs of two wild relatives of maize, the teosintes Zea mays ssp. parviglumis and Zea. mays. ssp. mexicana. We examined the association between the distance to their climatic and geographic centroids and the enrichment of SNPs bearing signals of adaptation. ...

Biogenic hydroxyapatites from mammalian bones naturally contain traces of ions, like Mg, which play a vital role in the bone remodeling process. In this way, synthetic hydroxyapatites should include this kind of mineral. In this work, hydroxyapatite added with Mg was synthesized by wet precipitation using (NH4)H2PO4, Ca(NO3)2.4H2O, and Mg(NO3)2.6H2O (0, 0.032, 0.061, and 0.123 M). Chronic complications of traumatic brain injury represent one of the greatest financial burdens and sources of suffering in the society today. A substantial number of these patients suffer from posttraumatic headache (PTH), which is typically associated with tactile allodynia. We have addressed this gap in the field by characterizing the tactile sensory profile of ...

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is caused by mutations in the secretory Cl- channel CFTR (cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator). Variation in the severity of disease has been attributed to mutations in the CFTR gene that cause different degrees of dysfunction of the CFTR Cl- channel. This observation suggests that other 'environmental' factors might ...
