This paper is concerned with one of the most basic syntactic questions: what are the properties of verbs that determine syntactic structure, aspectual interpretation and argument selection? We approach this issue through an examination of two different types of verbs of contact. We propose that the meanings of verbs are decomposed into atomic meaning components and that these meaning components project syntactic structure. From these meaning components and the structures they project we derive argument ...

Abstract Teachers regularly use gesture as part of multimodal instruction to both break and make common ground. Teachers break common ground when they introduce new ideas and new mathematical practices. Teachers make common ground by connecting new ideas to students’ prior knowledge and to current disciplinary practices. Our findings show the importance of linking gestures , a highly regulated aspect of pedagogical communication, which is used to foster connection building, while reducing the cognitive ...

Benjamin Steiner, John Wooldredge,

Abstract Prison officers are directly responsible for transmitting penal culture and prison policy to the confined, yet few studies of officers’ impact on inmate behavior have been conducted. We examined the effect of inmates’ perceptions of officer legitimacy on rule breaking within prisons, as well as the effects of officers’ reliance on different power bases on rates of rule breaking across prisons. The findings from bi‐level analyses of data from inmates and officers from 33 prisons revealed ...

Steven M. Boker, Jennifer L. Rotondo,

Mirror symmetry between individuals is a behavioral phenomenon that is commonly observed in conversation: individuals tend to mimic each other’s postures and gestures as a part of a shared dialog. The present work studies the process of symmetry building and symmetry breaking in the movements of pairs of individuals while imitating each others’ movements in dance. Spatial and temporal symmetries are found in the overall velocities from the results of full body motion tracking. This work was supported ...

Hannah S. Sarvasy,

Clause chaining in Papuan languages is a keystone of the literature on switch-reference (Haiman & Munro 1983, Stirling 1993). Canonically, a clause chain is considered to comprise one or more ‘medial’ clauses, followed by a single ‘final’ clause. In Nungon and other Papuan languages, canonical clause chains coexist with non-canonical clause chains, which either feature medial clauses postposed after the final clause, or lack a final clause altogether. I examine the functions of non-canonical medial clauses ...

Sampson and Wilson (1995) argued that the sources of crime are invariant across race, and are instead rooted in the structural differences between communities. This study involved an examination of the applicability of this thesis to incarcerated individuals. Random samples totaling 2,388 blacks and 3,118 whites were drawn from 46 prisons in Ohio and Kentucky. Race-specific and pooled bi-level models of violent and nonviolent rule violations were estimated. Differences between race-specific models ...

Abstract Linkages between extreme precipitation events (EPEs) in the central and eastern United States and synoptic-scale Rossby wave breaking are investigated using 1979–2015 climatologies of EPEs and upper-level potential vorticity (PV) streamers. The investigation focuses on two domains over the central and eastern United States, respectively, and emphasizes widespread EPEs, events exhibiting exceptionally large precipitation volumes. The relative frequency of PV streamers is found to be significantly ...

Sandrine Sorlin,

This paper focuses on the American TV series version of House of Cards, paying specific attention to the second person pronoun used by the protagonist (Francis Underwood) in his address to the viewer, thus breaking the classical fourth wall. It both evinces the similarities of the use of the second person pronoun in literature and in the TV series and highlights the differences due to the specificity of the TV medium. It also points out the subtle manipulation of the viewer generated by the versatile ...

We conducted an in-depth analysis of an observation of a medical encounter, triangulated ...

Rotation of molecules embedded in He nanodroplets is explored by a combination of fs laser-induced alignment experiments and angulon quasiparticle theory. We demonstrate that at low fluence of the fs alignment pulse, the molecule and its solvation shell can be set into coherent collective rotation lasting long enough to form revivals. With increasing fluence, however, the revivals disappear -- instead, rotational dynamics as rapid as for an isolated molecule is observed during the first few picoseconds. ...
