SUMMARY A new type of microrobot is described. Its simple and compact design is believed to be of promise in the microrobotics field. Stepping motion allows speeds up to 4mm/s. Resolution smaller than 10 nm is achievable. Experiments in an open-loop motion demonstrated a repeatability better than 50µm on a 10 mm displacement at an average speed of 0.25 mm/s. A position feedback based on a microvision system will be developed in order to achieve a submicron absolute position accuracy.

Experiments were performed on Q switching of erbium lasers at 3 mu m with an acoustooptical modulator. Different laser crystals of YAG:Er and YSGG:Cr:Er have been investigated. The highest fraction of single pulse Q-switch energy to free-running mode energy was 1%. Pulse durations of 50 ns were obtained. Multiple switching with up to 14 Q-switch peaks per flashlamp pulse could be generated, containing up to 19% of the energy of the free-running mode. >

Uniaxial quasi-static tensile testing on individual nanocrystalline Co nanowires (NWs), synthesized by electrochemical deposition process (EDP) in porous templates, was performed inside a scanning electron microscope (SEM) using a microfabricated tensile stage consisting of a comb drive actuator and a clamped–clamped beam force sensor. A 'three-beam structure' was fabricated by focused ion beam induced deposition (FIBID) on the stage, from which the specimen elongation and the tensile force could be ...

Abstract Background & Aims Hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia is characterized by arterio‐venous malformations ( AVM ). It frequently involves the liver without clinical symptoms, but may lead to biliary ischaemia, portal hypertension, or fatal high‐output heart failure. The indication of liver transplantation is controversial. Methods Herein, we report the case of a 65‐year‐old female patient with a ‘double Osler syndrome’ consisting of hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia ( HHT ) and type I hereditary ...

Portal vein embolization is widely used to induce hypertrophy of the future liver remnant before extended hepatectomy, decreasing the risk of postoperative liver failure. However, this percutaneous procedure has not been previously reported in a young child. The present report describes the case of a 14-month-old patient with a large multifocal mesenchymal hamartoma of the entire right liver, successfully resected after induction of future liver remnant hypertrophy by portal vein embolization.

Romain Bréguet, Lawrence F. Pupulim, Sylvain Terraz,

Visceral artery pseudoaneurysms are rare and only few cases have been reported. They are considered to be life threatening in case of rupture. Rapid treatment is mandatory and endovascular procedure is recommended as the treatment of choice. Occasionally, endovascular approach is difficult to achieve, owing to unusual vascular anatomy. Whenever it is the case, an alternative method has to be considered. We report the case of a jejunal artery pseudoaneurysm that required an access via collateral ...
