Phage display was first described by George P. Smith when it was shown that virus particles were capable of presenting foreign proteins on their surface. The technology has paved the way for the evolution of various biomolecules presentation and diverse selection strategies. This unique feature has been applied as a versatile platform for numerous applications in drug discovery, protein engineering, diagnostics, and vaccine development. Over the decades, the limits of biomolecules displayed on phage ...

Abstract We investigated the relationship of body size and prostate cancer risk in the Multiethnic Cohort, a longitudinal study of individuals ages 45 to 75 in Hawaii and in California. Self-reported measures of height and weight were obtained at baseline. Of 83,879 men enrolled from 1993 to 1996, a total of 5,554 were diagnosed with prostate cancer during an average of 9.6 years of follow-up. The influence of baseline weight and weight change since age 21 varied by ethnic group. Whites gaining ...

Background Using standard hemodialysis regimens, overweight patients often do not reach Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiatives (KDOQI) Kt/V targets, and this has been associated with lower health-related quality of life (HRQL). Whether increasing dialysis adequacy in large patients not achieving KDOQI targets improves HRQL is unknown. Study Design Randomized blinded crossover study. Setting & Participants Overweight (>80 kg) underdialyzed patients from 6 dialysis units in 2 Canadian dialysis programs. ...

Isu, the scaffold protein on which Fe-S clusters are built in the mitochondrial matrix, plays a central role in the biogenesis of Fe-S cluster proteins. We report that the reduction in the activity of several components of the cluster biogenesis system, including the specialized Hsp70 Ssq1, causes a 15-20-fold up-regulation of Isu. This up-regulation results from changes at both the transcriptional and posttranslational level: an increase in ISU mRNA levels and in stability of ISU protein. Its biological ...

This study examined how coparenting and firstborn children's temperament predicted children's cooperative behavior in response to maternal requests for assistance in the care of a 1-month-old infant sibling. Children's cooperative responding was observed during a diaper change session for 216 firstborns (ages 13 to 70 months; M = 32). Parents also completed questionnaires assessing coparenting and children's temperament. Results suggested that coparenting quality moderated the association between children' ...

A developmental cascade model was tested to examine longitudinal associations among firstborn children's aggression, theory of mind (ToM), and antagonism toward their younger sibling during the 1st year of siblinghood. Aggression and ToM were assessed before the birth of a sibling and 4 and 12 months after the birth, and antagonism was examined at 4 and 12 months in a sample of 208 firstborn children (initial M age = 30 months, 56% girls) from primarily European American, middle‐class families. Firstborns' ...

Insects can be models for understanding human intestinal infection and pathology. Molting, a special period during which the old insect cuticle is shed and a new one is produced, is crucial for insect development. Holometabolous insects may experience several larva-to-larva moltings to become larger, a pupal molt and adult eclosion to become adults. During the larval molts, they stop feeding and become quiescent. Although the molting larvae become quiescent, it is not known if changes in microbiome, ...

Formamidinium lead halide (FAPbX3, X = Cl, Br, I) perovskite materials have recently drawn an increased amount of attention owing to their superior optoelectronic properties and enhanced material stability as compared with their methylammonium-based (MA-based) analogues. Herein, we report a study of the pressure-induced structural and optical evolutions of FAPbI3 hybrid organic–inorganic perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) using a synchrotron-based X-ray scattering technique coupled to in situ absorption and ...

Abstract Invertebrate animals have the capacity of repairing wounds in the skin and gut via different mechanisms. Gastrointestinal perforation, a hole in the human gastrointestinal system, is a serious condition and surgery is necessary to repair the perforation to prevent an abdominal abscess or sepsis. Here we report the repair of gastrointestinal perforation made by a needle-puncture wound in the silkworm larval midgut. Following insect gut perforation, only a weak immune response was observed ...
