Synthesising evidence on the long-term vaccine effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines (BNT162b2 [Pfizer-BioNTech], mRNA-1273 [Moderna], ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 [AZD1222; Oxford-AstraZeneca], and Ad26.COV2.S [Janssen]) against infections, hospitalisations, and mortality is crucial to making evidence-based pandemic policy decisions. In this rapid living systematic evidence synthesis and meta-analysis, we searched EMBASE and the US National Institutes of Health's iSearch COVID-19 Portfolio, supplemented by manual searches ...

Summary Metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) yields unprecedented clinical outcomes, though variability is high in weight change and health benefits. Behavioral weight management (BWM) interventions may optimize MBS outcomes. However, there is a lack of an evidence base to inform their use in practice, particularly regarding optimal delivery timing. This paper evaluated the efficacy of BWM conducted pre‐ versus post‐ versus pre‐ and post‐MBS. The review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for ...

The success of large-scale COVID-19 vaccination campaigns is contingent upon people being willing to receive the vaccine. Our study explored COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy and its correlates in eight different countries around the globe. We analyzed convenience sample data collected between March 2020 and January 2021 as part of the iCARE cross-sectional study. Univariate and multivariate statistical analyses were conducted to explore the correlates of vaccine hesitancy. We included 32,028 participants ...

The association between dairy product consumption and cardiovascular health remains highly debated. We quantitatively synthesized prospective cohort evidence on the associations between dairy consumption and risk of hypertension (HTN), coronary heart disease (CHD), and stroke. We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science through August 1, 2020, to retrieve prospective cohort studies that reported on dairy consumption and risk of HTN, CHD, or stroke. We used random-effects models to ...

The nanoencapsulation of essential oils for biodegradable films functionalization is a viable alternative for the production of active food packaging. In this study, the Cinnamodendron dinisii Schwanke essential oil was nanoencapsulated using zein as wall material, and applied in chitosan matrix to produce an active nanocomposite film packaging for food conservation. The chemical composition of the Cinnamodendron dinisii Schwanke essential oil showed a variety of unexplored bioactive compounds, ...

Lavandula angustifolia (LaEO) essential oil has been widely used by aromatherapy in the treatment of various clinical conditions, with evidence of its analgesic and anti-inflammatory potential. Our results demonstrate that sixty-five substances were identified in LaEO. Among the compounds found, the major ones were linalool (30.61%) and linalyl acetate (20.36%). We found that LaEO inhalation reduces mechanical hyperalgesia in conditions of chronic inflammatory and neuropathic pain. Furthermore, this ...

Mangalarga Marchador (MM) is the most numerous horse breed in Brazil. The aim of this study was to analyze the genetic structure of the MM horses population of Brazil based on pedigree analysis and identify factors that may affect its genetic variability. Pedigree data from 1906 to 2015 was used and the inbreeding and probability of gene origin parameters were obtained, considering the total population (TP, n = 514,282) and a reference population (RP, n = 172,508) from 2005 to 2015. The generation interval ...

Background Obesity is associated with an accelerated cognitive decline. Aerobic fitness has a protective effect on cognition in older adults, but no study has investigated this effect in obese individuals. The present study aimed to 1) compare cognitive function in lower-fit (LoFit) and higher-fit (HiFit) obese individuals compared with nonobese individuals, and 2) examine the association between exercise variables (including hemodynamic variables) and cognitive function in obese individuals. Methods ...

The aim of this study was to identify whether more and less adapted Angus and Simmental cattle differed in physiological responses and expression of the heat shock factor 1 (HSF1) and the heat shock 70 kDa protein 6 (HSPA6), when subjected to heat stress. Thirty bulls (n = 15 ANG; n = 15 SIM), extremes "more adapted" and "less adapted" within each breed were selected to the heat tolerance test. They were selected according to an index based on the average of the respiratory rate obtained on two hot summer ...

Knowledge of thermoregulatory responses in taurine cattle contribute to identification of animals most adapted to heat and productive when raised under Brazilian climate. The objectives were to verify the morphological and physiological responses related to adaptation to heat of taurine breeds raised under in Brazilian meteorological conditions in different seasons of the year and day periods, and to detect differences within and between breeds to know breed is most adapted. Betulinic acid (BA) has been described as an insulin secretagogue which may explain its potent antihyperglycemic effect; however, the exact role of BA as an insulinogenic agent is not clear. The aim of this study was to investigate the mechanism of BA on calcium influx and static insulin secretion in pancreatic islets isolated from euglycemic rats. We found that BA triggers calcium influx by a mechanism dependent on ATP-dependent potassium channels and L-type voltage-dependent calcium channels. Additionally, ...
