The first stage in the degradation and recycling of primary sewage sludge and particulate organic matter is the solubilisation and enhanced hydrolysis of complex polymeric organic carbon structures associated with the anaerobic sulphidogenic environment. Solubilization of complex carbon substrates provides the primary reaction in the BioSURE Process, and is effected in the recycling sludge bed reactor (RSBR). During the process of anaerobic digestion, macromolecules are broken down into simpler low ...

Observational studies suggest statin therapy reduces incident sepsis, but few studies have examined the impact on new organ failure. We tested the hypothesis that statin therapy, administered for standard clinical indications to ventilated intensive care unit patients, prevents acute organ failure without harming the liver. We performed a retrospective, single-centre cohort study in a tertiary mixed medical/surgical intensive care unit. Mechanically ventilated patients without nonrespiratory organ ...

The mechanism of enhanced sludge floc fracture due to the action of enzymes hydrolysing important structural components, remains a key element in our understanding of how the floc integrity in systems utilising a sulphate-reducing system is compromised. Commercial β-glucosidase and cellulase as well as proteases were added to methanogenic bioreactor and sulphidogenic bioreactor sludge and the effect of these enzymes on sludge floc size (diameter) distribution was investigated using bright field and ...

When decellularizing kidneys, it is important to maintain the integrity of the acellular extracellular matrix (ECM), including associated adhesion proteins and growth factors that allow recellularized cells to adhere and migrate according to ECM specificity. Kidney decellularization requires the ionic detergent sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS); however, this results in a loss of ECM proteins important for cell adherence, migration, and growth, particularly glycosaminoglycan (GAG)-associated proteins. Here, ...

Spray columns can potentially be utilized for absorbing CO2 from large point sources such as flue gas exhausted by power plants. Low gas phase pressure drop, and the lack of internals which are susceptible to corrosion, make spray columns well suited for aqueous amine absorption. Design practices for spray columns are highly empirical and application specific. There is a paucity of data on absorption of CO2 in aqueous amine sprays. Mass transfer data for CO2-amine systems is required for robust ...

The first stage in the degradation and recycling of particulate organic matter is the solubilisation and enhanced hydrolysis of complex polymeric organic carbon structures associated with the sulphidogenic environment. An investigation into the enzymology of these processes has shown that lipase enzyme activities were found predominantly associated with the organic particulate matter of the sewage sludge. Sonication of the sludge gave an increase in enzyme activity as the enzymes were released into ...

Spray columns show potential to absorb CO2 into aqueous amine solvents such as monoethanolamine (MEA). Low gas phase pressure drop, less susceptibility to corrosion due to the absence of internals, and greater tolerance to use of precipitating solvents, are some of the favorable attributes associated with spray columns. At present, there is a need for robust spray absorption data with the CO2-MEA system. Experimental dropsize measurements with MEA as the test solvent have never been reported. Measurement ...

Sprays are widely used in the chemical industry for absorption operations such as gas conditioning and flue gas desulphurization. Despite the wide usage, spray absorption is poorly understood. For absorption applications, the rate of transfer of solute gas into all of the liquid drops is a strong function of the surface area of drops and hence the dropsize. Experimental measurements of dropsize at multiple locations within the spray plume and robust computation of the cumulative surface area of ...
