Studies focusing on 100% renewable energy systems have emerged in recent years; however, existing studies tend to focus only on the power sector using exploratory approaches. This paper therefore undertakes a whole-system approach and explores optimal pathways towards 100% renewable energy by 2050. The analysis is carried out for Ireland, which currently has the highest share of variable renewable electricity on a synchronous power system. Large numbers of scenarios are developed using the Irish ...

The European Union has a target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 80% below 1990 levels by 2050 to keep global warming within 2 °C relative to pre-industrial levels. The more recent Paris climate agreement has a more ambitious target of limiting the temperature rise to well below 2 °C and the EU ambition is growing to become climate-neutral by 2050. This research explores decarbonization options using an innovative analytical approach that combines energy systems analysis and marginal abatement ...

The integration of variable generation challenges electricity systems globally. Using Ireland's electricity sector as a case study, we highlight multiple challenges in reconciling ambition for variable renewable integration with market economics and system operation. Ireland has the highest share of non-synchronous variable renewable electricity on a single synchronous power system. This case study examines the strategy being implemented to optimally balance between efficiency, flexibility and adequacy ...

Weather-dependent renewable energy resources are playing a key role in decarbonizing electricity. There is a growing body of analysis on the impacts of wind and solar variability on power system operation. Existing studies tend to use a single or typical year of generation data, which overlooks the substantial year-to-year fluctuation in weather, or to only consider variation in the meteorological inputs, which overlooks the complex response of an interconnected power system. Here, we address these ...

Laura Mehigan, Paul Deane, Brian Ó Gallachóir, Valentin Bertsch,

The traditional paradigm of centralised electricity systems is being disrupted by increasing levels of distributed generation. It is unclear as to what level of distributed generation is expected, appropriate or optimal in future power systems. Many researchers have focused on how to integrate distributed generation into centralised electricity systems. Such research tends to consider optimality from narrow viewpoints focused on particular aspects of the electricity network such as the distribution ...

Over the past century, Ireland's electricity sector has undergone a significant transformation. This paper documents the nation's struggle to build an electricity system, to improve security of electricity supply through portfolio diversification and to promote indigenous energy sources. This was a challenge for an (electrically) isolated island with little natural resources. The paper also identifies the ineffective policy decisions that left Ireland exposed to the 1970s energy crises. The crises ...

This study provides a review of the emergence of hydrogen within low-carbon pathways from different integrated energy system models. The objective is to understand the drivers and policy scenarios that lead to the emergence of hydrogen over other low-carbon technologies. The review is divided into global, multi-regional and national integrated energy system models with drivers, marginal abatement costs and timing of hydrogen emergence assessed. Niamh Conroy, Paul Deane, Brian Ó Gallachóir,

This paper describes a method for quantifying wind farm availability using two different approaches and comparing the results. Wind turbine suppliers regularly guarantee turbine availability in terms of time. A typical value of 97% is generally taken as the industry standard. This paper shows that this guarantee can potentially under-compensate the wind farm operator for losses sustained depending on when the period of non-availability occurs. Here we present an alternative method to quantify wind ...

J. M. Shannon, S. C. Deane, Brian McGarvey, J. N. Sandoe,

It is shown that the drift in the current–voltage characteristics of silicon-rich amorphous silicon nitride metal–semiconductor–metal diodes can be explained by a mechanism whereby electron trapping centers are created via hole–electron recombination. A first order model which includes excitation of holes by hot electrons moving into the anode and recombination of electrons with holes trapped in the valence band tail is in good quantitative agreement with the measured dependencies between drift, ...
