Background & AimsDepletion of interstitial cells of Cajal (ICCs) is common in diabetic gastroparesis. However, in approximately 20% of patients with diabetes, gastric emptying (GE) is accelerated. GE also occurs faster in obese individuals, and is associated with increased blood levels of glucose in patients with type 2 diabetes. To understand the fate of ICCs in hyperinsulinemic, hyperglycemic states characterized by rapid GE, we studied mice with mutation of the leptin receptor (Leprdb/db), which in ...

Examine the concordance of perceived operative autonomy between attendings and resident trainees. Faculty and trainees rated trainee operative autonomy using the 4-level Zwisch scale over a variety of cases and training years. The respective ratings were then compared to explore the effects of experience, gender, case complexity, trainee, trainer, and other covariates to perceived autonomy. This study was conducted over 14 general surgery programs in the United States, members of the Procedural ...

The claustrum is a functionally and structurally complex brain region, whose very spatial extent remains debated. Histochemical-based approaches typically treat the claustrum as a relatively narrow anatomical region that primarily projects to the neocortex, whereas circuit-based approaches can suggest a broader claustrum region containing projections to the neocortex and other regions. Here, in the mouse, we took a bottom-up and cell-type-specific approach to complement and possibly unite these ...

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of different doses of E6020-SE on Trypanosoma cruzi-specific immune responses and its ability to confer protection against acute lethal infection in mice. Forty female BALB/c were infected with 500 trypomastigotes of T cruzi H1 strain, divided into four groups (n = 10) and treated at 7- and 14-day post-infection (dpi) with different doses of E6020-SE or PBS (control). LiFE is an algorithm that evaluates human connectome models derived from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and tractography methods. The algorithm achieves this goal by assessing the contribution of all the fiber tracts in a connectome to predict the measured MRI signal. Diffusion-weighted imaging coupled with tractography is currently the only method for in vivo mapping of human white-matter fascicles. Tractography takes diffusion measurements as input and produces the connectome, a large collection ...

Semi-directed interviews relating to the traditional knowledge (TK) of barren-ground caribou (Rangifer tarandus groenlandicus) movements were conducted with elders and hunters from the Denésoliné (Chipewyan) community of Lutsël K'é, Northwest Territories, Canada. The objective was to document Denésôliné knowledge of past and present caribou migration patterns and record their explanations for perceived changes in movements. Elders recognized expected and unusual levels of variation in caribou movements. ...

We discuss the formation of molecular oxygen in ultracold collisions between hydroxyl radicals and atomic oxygen. A time-independent quantum formalism based on hyperspherical coordinates is employed for the calculations. Elastic, inelastic and reactive cross sections as well as the vibrational and rotational populations of the product O2 molecules are reported. A J-shifting approximation is used to compute the rate coefficients. At temperatures T = 10 - 100 mK for which the OH molecules have been cooled ...

The geometric (Berry) phase is shown to have its origin in the nontrivial geometry of the fiber bundle: Hilbert space\ensuremath{\rightarrow}space of states. The nontrivial geometry comes simply from the scalar product in Hilbert space. A comprehensive treatment of the geometrical phase is presented, bringing together the various ideas in the literature.

By performing the most general Born–Oppenheimer procedure, the (non-Abelian) Berry connection for quantum systems in a quantum environment is derived. This method is then applied to the rapid rotation of a particle about a slowly changing axis, as exemplified by the electronic motion of a diatomic molecule. The angular part of the resulting dynamics for the quantum environment is equivalent to that of a monopole.

Abstract The geometric phase of quantum mechanics is introduced, and its physical effects are then studied in the context of molecular physics. By performing the most general Born–Oppenheimer procedure, we show how gauge groups appear in the study of molecules. This method is then applied to the doubly degenerate Λ‐levels of a diatomic molecule. The resulting dynamics for the slow angular motion of the dumbbell is equivalent to that of a Dirac monopole.

Brian K. Kendrick, C. Alden Mead, Donald G. Truhlar,

We present a new analysis of the nonadiabatic coupling terms in the coupled equations for nuclear motion wave functions when the Born–Oppenheimer (BO) representation is used for the electronic wave function. The new analysis leads to a criterion for truncating the series and neglecting terms in the coupled equations of motion. We show that in general the nonremovable part of the coupling is of the same magnitude as the removable part, except near intersections of the adiabatic states.
