Some dentures obey the ideal desires of prosthodontists and merely “settle” into a closer apposition to the soft tissues. Other dentures exhibit migratory tendencies and assume positions that are not intended by either the dentist or the patient. This study shows the use of cephalometrics in establishing a scientific basis for determining the phenomenon of denture migration. A basis for differentiating between settling and migration is proposed and demonstrated, and quantitative data are given for ...

The histologic examination and planimetric evaluation of tissue slices has been so far the only available technique for studying the extent of experimental myocardial infarcts in long-term studies; however, this approach is rather time-consuming when the sample size is large. This study describes a new biochemical method for the quantitation of myocardial scarring, based on the determination of left ventricular hydroxyproline, and collagen content at the end of the healing process. Accordingly, ...

This work presents the results of two complementary studies of the heterogeneous reaction of gas-phase ozone with solid pyrene films. In the first study, ozone uptake by the pyrene film was determined using a coated-wall flow tube system. In the second, pyrene loss within the film upon exposure to ozone was monitored using a laser-induced fluorescence technique. The dependence of the reactive loss rate on ozone concentration observed in both methods suggests that the reaction proceeds via a Langmuir- ...

The dissolution kinetics of solid humic acid (HA) particles under different conditions is reported and analyzed. The dissolution rate at pH 4 and 5 is very slow and several years may take to achieve equilibration. The rate is strongly increased by increasing pH, and at pH 11 complete dissolution is achieved in 30 min. The dissolution rate is also markedly increased by the presence of monocarboxylic acids and anionic herbicides such as glyphosate and 2,4-D. On the contrary, the rate is decreased by ...

We show that the asymptotic dynamics of two-dimensional de Sitter or anti-de Sitter Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity is described by a generalized two-particle Calogero-Sutherland model. This correspondence is established by formulating the JT model of (A)dS gravity in two dimensions as a topological gauge theory, which reduces to a nonlinear 0+1-dimensional sigma model on the boundary of (A)dS space. The appearance of cyclic coordinates allows then a further reduction to the Calogero-Sutherland quantum ...

Motivated by the vast string landscape, we consider the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio in conformal field theories dual to Einstein gravity with curvature square corrections. After field redefinitions these theories reduce to Gauss-Bonnet gravity, which has special properties that allow us to compute the shear viscosity nonperturbatively in the Gauss-Bonnet coupling. By tuning of the coupling, the value of the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio can be adjusted to any positive value ...

The kinetics of the heterogeneous reaction between gas-phase ozone and chlorophyll present at the air−salt water interface are altered in the presence of actinic radiation. Under dark conditions, a Langmuir−Hinshelwood mechanism is followed, but actinic illumination brings about a large enhancement in the rate and a change to a linear dependence on ozone concentration. This change is observed through the entire near-UV and visible spectrum but reverts to that seen in darkness with illumination >800 ...

In recent work we showed that, for a class of conformal field theories (CFT) with Gauss-Bonnet gravity dual, the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio, eta/s, could violate the conjectured Kovtun-Starinets-Son viscosity bound, eta/s > or = 1/4 pi. In this Letter we argue, in the context of the same model, that tuning eta/s below (16/25)(1/4 pi) induces microcausality violation in the CFT, rendering the theory inconsistent. This is a concrete example in which inconsistency of a theory and a lower bound ...

We report the results of two complementary studies of the heterogeneous reaction between gas-phase ozone and aqueous chlorophyll. In the first experiment, the chlorophyll is present at the air–water interface and its concentration is measured as a function of time, using laser-induced fluorescence, to obtain the surface kinetics. Under most experimental conditions, these are well described using a Langmuir–Hinshelwood formalism. The second experiment was carried out in a wetted-wall flowtube apparatus ...

We report uptake kinetics measurements of the heterogeneous reaction of gas phase NO2 with solid films of pyrene. By using a coated flow tube equipped with several near-ultraviolet (UV) emitting lamps (range 300-420 nm), we examined the effect of actinic radiation on the heterogeneous loss kinetics of nitrogen dioxide. With atmospherically relevant concentrations of NO2, (20-119 ppbv), the uptake ranged from below 10(-7) in the dark to 3.5 x 10(-6) under near-UV irradiation. Under illuminated conditions, ...

A remarkable increase in Proteus mirabilis strains producing acquired AmpC-type β-lactamases (CBLs) has been observed at Ospedale di Circolo e Fondazione Macchi (Varese, Italy) over the last few years. The epidemiology and treatment outcome of infections associated with this unprecedented spread are reported. From 2004–2006, 2070 P. mirabilis isolates were investigated. Extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) and CBL resistance determinants were identified by gene amplification and direct sequencing. ...

The adsorption of the herbicide paraquat (PQ2+) on goethite and on the binary system humic acid–goethite has been studied in batch experiments by performing adsorption isotherms under different conditions of pH, supporting electrolyte concentration and temperature. The results were completed with capillary electrophoresis (CE) in order to measure the binding isotherm between PQ2+ and humic acid (HA) molecules in solution. PQ2+ adsorption is negligible on the bare goethite surface but important on the ...

The photochemistry of anthraquinone-2-sulfonate (AQ2S) was studied as a function of pH, combining laser flash photolysis and steady-state irradiation experiments, with the additional help of a computational study of energy levels. Two out of the three transient species produced upon irradiation of AQ2S can be involved into the degradation of dissolved molecules, and also AQ2S in its ground state is degraded. The reactive transients are less stable but often more reactive under acidic conditions, ...
