Approaches to deplete persistent HIV infection are needed. We investigated the combined impact of the latency reversing agent vorinostat (VOR) and AGS-004, an autologous dendritic cell immunotherapeutic, on the HIV reservoir. HIV+, stably treated participants in whom resting CD4+ T cell-associated HIV RNA (rca-RNA) increased after VOR exposure ex vivo and in vivo received 4 doses of AGS-004 every 3 weeks, followed by VOR every 72 hours for 30 days, and then the cycle repeated. Following baseline, each child received two sessions of behavioral skills training and one in situ training session. Additional in situ training sessions were conducted until the child exhibited the safety skills (don't touch the gun, get away, and tell an adult). All children acquired and maintained the safety skills at a 3-month follow-up. In addition, of the 7 children assessed ...

106 HIV-positive patients with 129 episodes of oropharyngeal Candida infection were treated with fluconazole (50-300 mg/d). Treatment lasted from 4 to 23 days. The majority of patients were in more advanced stages of HIV infection (82% AIDS cases). Therapy with fluconazole led to complete healing or improvement of clinical symptoms in 93% of all treatment courses. However, according to cultural findings, an elimination or recession of pathogens was achieved in only 70% of cases. Cultural monitoring ...

In order to analyse whether drug sensitivity testing would be beneficial for clinical decision-making in heavily pretreated patients, we retrospectively studied viral genotype and phenotypic drug resistance in 12 HIV-1-infected patients, each of them with a history of failing at least one therapeutic regimen including one or two protease inhibitors (PIs). The salvage therapy included nelfinavir as new PI in all cases. Four patients showed a sustained and five patients a transient viral load decrease. ...

A standardized 6 × 12 × 24-mm bone defect was created below the articular surface of the medial tibia condyles on both hind legs of 18 adult sheep. The defect on the right side was filled with Nanobone(®), while the defect on the contralateral side was left empty. The tibial heads of six sheep were analyzed ...

Abstract The current study evaluated a behavioral skills training (BST) program in combination with in situ training to teach sexual abuse prevention skills to five women with mild to moderate mental retardation. In situ assessments were conducted following BST and in situ training sessions were conducted for those who were unable to demonstrate the skills in the natural setting. The results showed that generalization of the safety skills to the natural setting occurred for three of the five participants ...

Children's performance was measured during baseline, training, and at 2-week, 1-month, and 3-month follow-ups using in situ assessments in which abduction prevention skills were measured in naturalistic settings. Results revealed that all the children learned the skills and all the children available at the 2-week and 1- ...

ABSTRACT Obesity is a major problem for people in the United States. Individuals with mental retardation also are prone to obesity. The most successful programs for treating obesity typically are treatment packages consisting of multiple behavioral components. Research in the area of weight loss and mental retardation has not evaluated programs for individuals with mild mental retardation living independently in the community. This study examined the effectiveness of a behavioral weight loss treatment ...

The information obtained by conventional cytogenetics (CC) in human leukemias is sometimes limited, in particular by complex karyotypes with many marker chromosomes. While CC is restricted to metaphases with a good quality, interphase fluorescence in situ hybridization (I-FISH) is also capable of analyzing specific anomalies in the interphase nuclei. Comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) gives additional information about the imbalanced karyotype changes in the whole genome. The aim of this study ...

Although child abduction is a low‐rate event, it presents a serious threat to the safety of children. The victims of child abduction face the threat of physical and emotional injury, sexual abuse, and death. Previous research has shown that behavioral skills training (BST) is effective in teaching children abduction‐prevention skills, although not all children learn the skills. This study compared BST only to BST with an added in situ training component to teach abduction‐prevention skills in a small‐ ...
